I discovered this interesting audio lecture series by Andras Schiff on the complete Beethoven sonatas:

Lucky you. Myself, I'm quite happy to see people posting this sort of "old news"--I haven't heard these before. Thanks Pahl!

This is really wonderful. Better than reading a "dry" book or text. Sciff is both insightful and entertaining.

Betelgeuse, baby!
Having listened to a few of them, I was expecting more from him. I didn't learn anything that couldn't be gleaned from the score and from general music history knowledge. Eh, I'll give a few more a shot...

I pretty much agree with that.

I've listened to them all. They provide useful historical knowledge for those of us who are perhaps not already enlightened.

This is how I learned about the Fb/F issue in the first mvt. of op. 53.

I suppose taken in the spirit of their intended audience, i.e. the general public, they're not too shabby. Better than some program notes I've seen, for sure, and a good way to engage Joe and Jane Public in more active listening.

How was it that you initially found out about them? What was your source?

someone posted the link here a while ago, and there're some threads too since then discussing the lectures or some specific sonatas, such as Moonlight.

I went to Schiff's recital at the Lucerne Festival last month. Out of the 7 recitals that I attended, I enjoyed his best. His playing is technically flawless but highly nuanced; there was feeling even when he played Haydn. Not to be outdone by Pollini, who played the night before and did three encores, Schiff did four, including one of my favorites pieces, the Hungarian Melody.

thanks Pahl.

what a great resource - it is insightful and his passion is infectious, a refreshing way to 'hear it new' - and it is free.

I am hoping he does more of the same with other composers.

I think those lectures were the culmination of his preparation to record the entire Beethoven sonata cycle. The CDs started coming out a year or two ago. He's recently released CD #5. I'm collecting them as they come out.

I already have Brendel's cycle, Barenboim (live, on DVD), and Kovacevich. None perfect, but all insightful.
