Arg, I feel so held back! I am in undergraduate school right now and want to participate in as many competitions as I can but I don't know how to get started!

Does anyone live in North Carolina and/or know of any piano competitions in the Southern region?

I talked to my teacher about this but he is not very enthusiastic because he doesn't want me to get distracted - but I know myself and I really feel like I need some more competition/performance experience to build a solid resume for an outstanding graduate school.

Thanks!

eccp19 :

Does it have to be competitions? Why not make some effort to participate in some recitals which you might share with other musicians?

Regards,

I agree with BruceD. If you want performance experience, then perform. Perform for schools, churches, nursing homes, and you will begin to attract attention. Start your own performance series. The experience that you got from doing something like that will serve you better than competitions.

Here in Victoria, BC, I have just joined a "piano performance" group of adult piano students who, I am told, meet once a month to play current repertoire for each other. The whole idea behind the formation of this group is to give adult students who have little performance experience some opportunity in informal settings to perform for others.

I am very excited about having found this group and I go to my first meeting with them today - with great anticipation and not without a little trepidation. I plan to play the Brahms Intermezzi, Op 119, 1 and 2.

Wish me luck!

Cheers!

I live in Greensboro.

I get sufficient performance experience in my masster classes at school. What I am looking for are actualy competitions where I can send the results to graduate schools.

Are there any southern ones?

Look at that website, it lists competitions by country and state.
