I am a piano student who also wants to play the guitar. I especially like classical guitar which requires that you play with well developed finger nails. As far as I have experienced in playing the piano, I need to cut my fingernails as short as possible. Now the question is, are there any other pianist/guitar players out there who have solved this dilema. Something that can be worn on the fingers to simulate having fingernails? I have tried some fingerpicks that anchor under a the fingernail but they can't work if you have no fingernail. Thanks in advance for any response.

I'm almost certain you can by some ring type things that slide onto your finger and stick out over your nail that will let you do this, don't know where you can get them though - I'd ask in a guitar shop

I play classical and also steel string fingerstyle guitar. Yes, you need nails, but only on your right hand. laugh If nails in piano playing bother you, you can find a compromise length.

If I may suggest one thing, there is a guitar-type instrument called the "requinto jarocho" it has 4 strings and is played with a pick, therefore your fingers don't get callous from plucking strings, and you don't need fingernails either. So it is compatible with piano playing.

Do not hesitate, if you have a chance to see a performance of this instrument. It is usually performed in "sones jarochos" which is a type of song native of the Vera Cruz region in Mexico. But some of the best performers of this instrument also play it in solo. It is virtuosic and very impressive. There are perfomances by groups all over the southwestern states and in Mexico of course, which is where this instrument is from.
