I'll have the oportunity to play with an orchestra in my town, but it is quite a small orchestra. They have all the strings, flutes and trumpet. I am supposed to choose a piece not difficult for the orchestra, and which won't need other instruments than these that I've written. I was thinking of the second movement of Chopin's first concerto, but I'm not sure about the orchestration. Any suggestions? Any other piece you know?

I played the 1st movement of Chopin's second concerto in F minor with a small orchestra not long ago. We only had strings then. I've also seen a performance of this concerto on TV with just strings in the orchestra. It worked out fine, as long as you have good piano playing. wink

Chopin should be fine for the orchestra, but it's quite a challenge for the pianist, so you'll have to decide if you're up to that. Of Mozart's concertos, I especially love the 23rd, which has a sublime slow movement, one of the very few Adagios he wrote. The 27th is also wonderful. You might also want to look into the Haydn concertos.

Flutes, trumpet and strings only?

That'll be difficult. I don't think there are any concertos for this specific instrumentation.

Though you could try the Shostakovich piano concerto no. 1 (for piano, trumpet and strings) or any of the numerous concerti for piano and strings.

Freeman: Mozart has an abundance of late adagios... you should try delving into them; they're all sublime.

Quantum: no Mozart for you without strings :p

EDIT: misread; I thought it didn't say strings (or maybe that was an edit on quantum's part)

In any case I'd advise keeping away from the more mature Mozart piano concertoes (9 onwards) as they have high demands for both soloist and orchestra...

Thanks for all the replies! I'll study them carefully and talk to the conductor... Thanks, EHpianist for your big search!
