Ok, let me expose my ignorance to all of cyberspace.

I went to my local music store to inquire about the piano sheet music to Oscar Peterson's Hymn to Freedom. They tell me it isn't in print in either single sheet or book. Can't be ordered.

I look on the internet and find a $40 book of live transcripts. Nice, but $40 is a little steep for one tune. (Not to mention I don't think my playing is up to Oscar's level quite yet. laugh ) I also see what appear to be single sheets for the tune but they are referred to as Chorals. See link here .

Can anyone explain what is a Choral? The website itself does not seem very clear in explaining Chorals. Why do I see three of them for one tune, and if this isn't what I want (and I don't think it is) is there any place that would sell this single sheet?

And finally, why do I find anything on the internet if my local music store says there is nothing in print? How does all this music publishing work? Or do I really want to know?

Thanks for any light you can shed. smile

There are few joys in life greater than the absence of pain.

The people at your music store are idiots. The Hymn to Freedom is of course in the transcription book. It's tricky in spots and is (I think) a transcription of the piano part from the trio version, but it works okay as a solo piece. (I work on it from time to time.)

The choral arrangments are just that - for various voice combinations. SATB = Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass (4 part choir), SSA = Soprano Soprano, Alto, etc...

"If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him." (John Holt)
