How do you define a term "21st century"?

I think the formidable Russians (Kissin and Volodos) should be mentioned. Kissin, in my mind, takes the top spot, but I think at least a mention is warranted regardless. wink

I think Kritt meant to ask,

Does it classified as 21-century pianist either one of these circumstances:

1.) Born in 21 century (which most of the pianists nowadays won't be included)

2.) Debutted/popular in 21 century (which people like zimerman, pogorelich, kissin won't be included) (while Yundi Li, Lang Lang will be considered the 21 century pianists)

3.) Still alive in 21 century (then a lot of pianists who were considered as the great 20th century pianists will overlap into the 21 century.)

And yea, a little bit clarification won't hurt right? No need to get all hostile.

Steinway Model D,

I think your number 3, is correct. Meaning those still playing. It cannot include anyone born in this century.

And you can't count Lang Lang under "debuted in the 21st century" because his debut was in 1999 (and I think Yundi Li debuted before Lang Lang, but don't know that for certain). (And if you're counting "popular", then Kissin et al ARE still in. wink )

not wishing to appear pedantic here SteinwayModelD but i'm pretty sure we won't have any names from pianists Born in 21 century! laugh

I'm surprised no one mentioned Laisenia Iloilovatu from Fiji who won first prize in the 3rd International Lang-Lang Memorial Piano Competition in 2026.

I'm sooo sorry, I forgot to mention Kissin in my list! eek How could I do such an awful thing?
21st century pianist is anyone with most of their career in the 21st century. Argerich would NOT count, Kissin would. Kissin lived half of half of his life in the last century. That's not too much compared to how long he will probably live in the 21st.
