The great american virtuoso Earl Wild is turning 90 this year and I feel that this is the time to be celebrating this remarkable artist's achievements.

Out of his huge discography, I particularly treasure his 1995 Sony (later Ivory Classics) recording of virtuoso piano transcriptions entitled the 'Romantic Master'. My favourite on this disc is the maestro's stunning rendition of Paul Pabst's paraphrase on Sleeping Beauty. I would be interested to know what other forum members think of this disc?

Although I enjoy Josef Lhevinne's celebrated rendition of the Shulz-Evler Blue Danube, I feel that Earl Wild's has more magic. His performance of Godowsky's paraphrase on Johann Strauss' Artist's life is simply transcendent. Both these performances being on Philips 'Great Pianists of the 20th Century'.

I am aware that Earl Wild is playing in various european cities, including London, next year.I will in the queue for a ticket!

One of my favourite living pianists!

I am particularly fond his Chopin Nocturnes, although many of his albums are excellent. Such as:

-The Demonic Liszt
-Rachmaninoff Concerti(If only for #1 and 4)
-Chopin Etudes
-Scharwenka & Paderewski Piano Concertos
-Earl Wild at 30(Liszt Sonata from 1940s)

All I have is some Rachmaninov and Liszt. His Liszt Sonata is amazing, and I love his Un Sospiro!

As for Rocky, I prefer not to listen to Wild, though his Rhapsody is quite good (I find great pleasure in comparing his to that of Kapell, because they are both so good, and so inspiring, yet so different)

Pianojerome: Have you listeneded to Wild's Rachmaninoff 1st and 4th concertos? They are top shelf, in my opinion. I even prefer Wild's 4th to Michelangeli's.

Yeah, I've listened to them. I don't really listen to those concertos much anyways, but I do recall them be very good. I really don't like his Rach 3, though. His Rach 2 is good, but a bit rushed, I think. (Well, Rachmaninov was Russian, but that doesn't give Wild any right to be Rushin'!)

Earl Wild is one of the greatest. His transcriptions are wonderful - I have his CD's of transcriptions of Gershwin and Rachmaninov songs.
