Another good account of this duel is in Schonberg's "The Great Pianists."

Liszt would have won decisively, but the ref deducted a point because he butted Thalberg in the third round.

Good Stuff. James Bartel does the morning show at classical 103.5 in the Washington D.C area. Its a fantastic classical station.

It gives a great sense of the social environment of the time.

And in the same sense as Liszt defeating Thalberg, I hope my avatar puts MisterRubato's in its place. wink

Perhaps Mr. Bartel is a better radio host than a writer! I would at least hope so, for the reputation of 103.5

Cheers!

Strange that so much passion was spent on a set of worthless French salonisti. As if there were a crowd of French virtuosi? Even one? They should have held the contest in Vienna.

Ettu brute! (Palindrome) or is it Etude? Since I'm overwhelmed by your platinum status and your flying arpeggio finale.. I make way for the "only avatar!" and bring out a new one..I couldn't find one with 3 hands.. :-)

The whole piano duel thing suddenly reminded me of a ragtime duel in the movie, "The Legend of 1900." It's the story of a self taught virtuoso pianist, who was born during a crossing in 1900 and abandoned by his mother. Members of the ships' crew adopt him as a kind of mascot. He spends his entire life aboard the liner, eventually becoming the ships' entertainer. The "duel" between our fictional virtuoso and Jelly Roll Morton is one of the highlights of the movie. My daughter (who is not into piano at all) turned me on to it. Here's a link:

Slow down and do it right.
