this is my VERY favorite piece so far (i started my classical life 4 years ago frown ) - in fact, i`m totally in love with it and collect all the recordings i can find. (so far 72 different CDs)

i`m interested in:

- hearing what others think about it
- finding out what people think about favorite recording
- discover rare recordings

smile

Richter and Rubinstein play it very powerful and yet very beautifully.

Well, now I'm listening to Kissin. I also have Ashkenazy's early recording (with the scherzi).

Ashkenazy's Chopin in general was good in his early years.

!!!!!! eek Where did you find this?

I sat spellbound for 7 mins 48 seconds and it suddenly stopped, my PC crashed (attempting suicide I think). I was so looking forward to the CODA, never mind.

Seriously I like to hear Murray Perahia play Chopin.

Cortot's -33 recording is my favourite. The sound quality (on the EMI publication at least) is surprisingly good, too.

I have recordings of Bella Davidovich, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Arrau and Richter.

Despite that I find the last three of them superb, in my opinion the version of Richter is simply the best thumb wow

Richter(DG)
Zimerman(Live from Warsaw 1975)
Kuerti
Malcuzynski

Moravec good-not great, and both Perahia and Pollini are not so good. Hough was disappointing as well.

There are VERY few good recordings of this piece. I have heard maybe 15 that weren't crap.

Hey iamcanadian,

Where did you get Zimerman's 1975 recording? I have one 1975 "live from Warsaw" recording of his that contains Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise, some Mazurkas, etc., but Ballade No. 4 is NOT on it. I would *kill* to hear that!

And I agree with you that very few people actually do justice to this piece. Very, very few.

My favorites, so far: Ashkenazy's early recording, Rubinstein, and Ralph Votapek (an old MSU LP, half Chopin and half Gershwin Songs).
