The Henle Urtext version, i would say, is the best. it is laid out nicely, and is worth the money( i got book 1 at jwpepper.com( i think) for 27 bucks.

A while back, there was an article in CLAVIER magazine that recommended the Peters score edited by Franz Kroll. This is an older, widely-used edition of the WTC that has very meticulously worked-out fingering (a great help for these preludes and fugues).

I got into a arguement with Alex on the point of fingered and unfingered Bach editions. Remember this: http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000081 smile

I generally like Henle for Bach, they are urtext, but they add fingerings, (There is also an option for no fingerings) this to me is an advantage, since those fingerings reflect careful and experienced research sometimes, even though the editor might have a different approach. Fingerings should be merely suggestive aids, working out your own is the best in the long run. There is also a New Bach Edition, from Barenreiter, I do not know too much about it, but it seems to be good also. Anybody have any info on them?
