i thought he wanted to marry her but she didn't and yet got jealous when she learned he had a girl-friend.

That's the common version but after reading Swafford's biography I came away with the strong impression that Brahms was never the "marrying type" and after Robert's death, Brahms is the one who kept Clara at arm's length.

Perhaps, but I think that over simplifies. Clara very much took on the mantle of a "professional widow". They both kept each other at "arm's length".

As did practically every other self-respecting (yet suffering) artist/musician/writer of the 19th century! Of course, those who couldn't be bothered contracting it, had to be satisfied with tuberculosis instead.
