I'll be in Cologne tomorrow. Does anyone know of any good stores near the train station?

Norbert,

Thanks, I'll check those out. Now I'll rustle up a map to see just how close they are to the bahnhof.

Check also the Bechstein centre in Koeln for sure, it'll be an experience.......

C. Bechstein Centrum Köln „music city“

E-Mail: koeln@bechstein-centren.de

P.S. Cologne has one of the most famous German music colleges "Hochschule fuer Musik" - it's also Europe's largest with 1800 students and 440 staff: they apparently require at least 10 different brands of pianos to have their students express music on different instruments....in different ways.

WELCOME TO ART IN EUROPE........ thumb

AND don't forget to sample the famous Cologne beer "Koelsch" - wunderbar!!

Gute Reise!!

I'm in Bonn now, and I already had a Koelsch. A very fine choice on a hot summer day.

Norbert,

Well, Anthony and I popped into Rumler today. Sorry to say, but we were rather disappointed. The second floor is all uprights. Perhaps the heat wave over here has severely affected tuning, but the ones we played seemed out of tune and rather un-prepped. The Bluthners had a fine action, but the tone was not up to standards I heard in NY. Perhaps the best two that I played were a pair of Steinways ...K132 I think ...and some Wilhelm Steinbergs. The Steinbergs were actually rather small. Perhaps they were 44". One of the Sauters was positively nasty. The top treble, just around the end of the dampers was really tinny and the bass strings were fairly dead.

Their grand pianos were up on the third floor. Anthony and I went up and found the door locked. So we went down and asked if we could try them. We were given a firm "nein" without further explanation. Oh well. Perhaps they knew we weren't buyers. We just quietly left, feeling rather disappointed.

Perhaps you can let them quietly know -- in German -- that they didn't earn any good will or further recommendations from us. wink Nah, don't bother.

David

Service in Germany often really sucks! mad

Especially those smallish places.......

Tell them that the Chinese hordes are marching towards Bonn - with smiling faces.

Should they finally take over Germany's economy - 'friendly face' customer service is the first that will change.

Of course not everybody will be smiling....

P.S. I wrote 'Rumler' my peace.

Well, after two Koelsch at lunch the family and I wandered through Koln today. We found Opern Passage and timidly wandered into the Bechstein dealership ....ah .....palace. This was a thoroughly modern place in a contemporary urban mall. They have their new Bechsteins (and Academys and Euterpes) upstairs. We played a few for a short while. The C.Bechstein 210 was full-throated and roaring. They also had a beautifully restored 1907 model, but I didn't have a chance to do more than pick a few notes. Unfortunately they asked us to stop playing after a little while. They were actively trying to sell a piano on the other side of the floor. They were really polite about this and invited us to visit the downstairs. There we discovered some lightly used pianos including another excellent C.Bechstein and a slightly over-voiced six year old Bluthner. The dealership also has a small, glassed in concert room with a 9' Bechstein in the place of honor.

All in all, we had a fine time there though I would have liked a bit more time to explore the upstairs. I think if I had tried to stay any longer both of my children would have tried to amputate my hands. They wanted to get on to the chocolate factory/museum.

Piano Dad,

if you have some spare time you should try to visit the Bechstein centre on Thursday at 5pm or on Saturday at 1pm.

They host free recitals on that 9ft Bechstein every week which are open to the public. It's a very informal event so just pop in whenever you want.

Usually it's a classic recital on Thursday and Jazz on Saturday. If you're lucky you will be able to hear the Jarry Singla Trio, one of my favourite local Jazz artists.

Enjoy your stay in Cologne.

Regards Tim

CMK: alas, no pictures of pianos. Plenty from Cologne, however!

Hannibal: I would love to have popped in for the open recitals but my time in Cologne was limited to that day.

Whippen: After three chocolate samples from different processes I knew that enough was enough. Kids seem to swing by the places where samples are offered at least twice. laugh

Amazing what the hostile competition can do to the pianos of its competitiors.

The official Sauter dealers in the area there are "Schocke pianos" in Koeln.

They're in wonderful condition there.....

How's the rest of the trip coming?

No more chocolate, I hope... laugh
