Since there's a thread about the greatest non-Bach fugues, I think it appropriate that we discuss the greatest Bach fugues. As the WTC has 48 of them, it seems like a good place to look for potential candidates. What do you think?

Maybe not the greatest, but certainly one of my favorites (I'm not familiar with the entire WTC):

My favorite fugue of all time is Contrapunctus 3 from the AoF.

Greater than the P.D.Q. Bach "Fuga Meshuga" (from The Musical Sacrifice)?

My current faves are the ones I'm working on in Book II; Prelude 14 F# minor and Prelude 18 G# minor.. I like that fugue too.. but will probably take a long break before I learn it... My next favorite will probably be Prelude #3 in what is probably C# minor. All these compete with the D minor fugue in Book 1, which would be my favorite if I hadn't gone exploring in the 2nd book.

fugue no.10 in WTC1 is great, although it's only a 2-part fugue.

My current favourite WTC is Koroliov. Alongside his Inventions/Sinfonias and Art of Fugue it is his best Bach.
I also like Gould, Richter and have soft spots for Schiff and Roberts. (Does anyone know Bernard Roberts Partitas? I note that he has the French Suites coming out in May and am wondering if this is turning into a Bach series that I need to collect.)
Always found Fischer difficult to warm to (I know this is considered sacrilege...).
Personal favourite fugue: WTC I, F minor. The two entries of the subject in the major, which appear sounding like chorale melodies, get me every time.

Oh yes, Andrew - I forgot Bernard Roberts; I like his WTC very much.
I've not heard his Partitas. I was going to pick them up, but I've been completely smitten by Andrew Rangell's recording - really fantastic, IMO.

I vote for C# minor, Eb minor and B minor of WTC1, and D Maj and E Maj from WTC2.
However, Bach reserved his best fugues for the Organ and there the E minor (wedge), Eb major (Clavieruebung III), B minor (Great P&F), C major (coupled with 9/8 Prelude), D minor (Dorian), F major (with Tocatta) are my favorites. I've probably missed a few other favs like C minor (wi Passacaglia) and D major (awesome footwork) come to mind.
From AoF I like Contrpuncti VII and XI and the Ricercari from the Musical Offering aint bad either.
Ah Bach, I love that grumpy old guy.
