I'm going to hear Richard Goode this afternoon at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. Here's the program:

  • Haydn Sonata in C major (#50)

Mozart Rondo in A minor (K511)

Beethoven Sonata in E minor, Op. 90

Beethoven Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 81a (Les Adieux)

    Debussy Preludes, Book I

Quite a program. Two of my very favorite Beethoven sonatas, one of my favorite Haydn sonatas, and wonderful Debussy. It'll be really interesting to hear Goode playing Debussy -- that's repertoire expansion for a Beethoven specialist!

I'll report back later this evening after the recital.

I heard Goode several times in recital and in at least one master class. I thought each recital was terrific. I think he has actually played quite a bit of Debussy before, since I remember hearing it both recitals.

But the guy looks like an unmade bed. I have been to a number of his recitals and cannot get past the eye pollution...

Just got back from the recital, and it was great, especially the Beethoven. He takes the second movement of Op. 90 a little fast for my taste, but that's OK. Les Adieux was tremendous. The Haydn was joyous and playful. The Debussy was beautifully rendered. Goode is, it seems to me, a very un-egotistical pianist. He appears to be a conduit for the composer and the music, getting himself out of the way, and letting the music speak for itself.

Which may be a round-about way to say he's not a showman, he doesn't have huge stage presence, but his musicianship is impeccable and his technique is a truly beautiful thing to watch. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!

He played one encore, a Chopin nocturne -- Op. 55, No. 2, which is heartbreakingly beautiful.
