I like toccatas, even though some aren't hard musically. Audiences love their speed.

So my question is, how would you rate these toccatas in difficulty?

Schumann, Op.7 (methinks)
Prokofiev, Op.11
Ravel (Tombeau de Couperin)
Debussy (Pour le Piano)
Khaturian (sp?)

Thanks.

Khachaturian
Debussy
Prokofiev
Ravel
Schumann

IMO. Although, I really don't know which is harder out of Ravel and Schumann - both are ferocious, but that is my instinct.

How do the Variations Serieuses (not a toccata, but a piece I plan to learn maybe) compare in difficulty to the aforementioned pieces.

I haven't seen a score, but I'd imagine somewhere around the level of the Khachaturian and Debussy. I could be wrong though!

The Schumann, Ravel, and Prokofiev are all monsters. I would imagine that the Schumann is the toughest, though I haven't played, nor dream of playing any of them in the near future. The Khachaturian on the other hand is easier than it sounds. I have played it, and it was a very quick learn.

My favorite of those mentioned is the Ravel, followed by the Prokofiev. But it will be a long while before I play either.

I agree with Max's list, though I'd be tempted to switch the Prokofiev and Debussy.

I stick by my judgement - as I can play the Debussy, but the Prokofiev has too many repeated notes (in all forms) for my liking smile

The Variations Serieuses are quite a bit more difficult than the Khachaturian, but certainly not as difficult as the Prokofiev; not sure how it compares to the Debussy though.
