I usually write in the timimg. For example, 1+2+, or 1e+a, 2e+a, etc. Now I know alla breve is like 2/2 timing and the half-notes get one beat, but how do I count a dotted quarter-note with a sixteenth. It's for a Chopin prelude, Op.28, No. 4. Thanks in advance for you help.

Isn't it an eighth-note with a sixteenth?

If it's the one at the very beginning of the song, then it will begin on the and of 2 and sixteenth will be a 32nd note before count 1 of the first full measure.

1 e and a and e and a 2 e and a AND e and A.

The capitalized/bold parts is the rhythm.

You count 2 beats to a measure. You play the notes within those beats according to the proportions indicated by the values of the notes.

One thing that is difficult at first is to differentate the feeling between 2/2 and 4/4. They appear on the surface to be the same but they are not. You have to think of it kind of like twice as much going on betwen the beats or maybe that 2/2 is a simpler meter having half as many "sub-beats". It is definitely a feeling and one you can only acquire by deliberately counting 1...2...1...2 instead of 1...2...3...4...1...2...3...4. With regard to your specific question, a dotted quarter followed by a sixteenth would take up an entire beat. The sixteenth should lead into the next beat. Something like 1..&2..&1..&2

Thanks all for your helpful answers. I appreciate it. SBiv87, I think you're right about the first measure it's an eight note with a sixteenth. smile
