obviously not as well as warm...I don't imagine anyone plays better when the anatomical muscle contraction system operates slower.

Definitely not. I would guess that's pretty universal, and it's been on my mind a little bit recently as autumn begins.

If indoor heat isn't maintained at a genuinely comfortable temperature (due to concern over energy costs or otherwise), it can certainly be a problem.

I prefer my hands a little cooler because they sweat a lot. Not actually cold, though, because, as already said, my fingers move more slowly.

No. [Linked Image]

If I can, I always thoroughly wash with warm water when my hands are cold. Then I do some scales & maybe a simple piece or two before my hands will function to the best of their ability.

Funny thing is, unless it's really cold, just doing this once in the morning sets me up for all day. I later only have to do some scales or something again to warm up.

One of my favorite things to do when the "curse of cold hands" strikes [Linked Image] [Linked Image] is to play a chromatic scale in octaves with both hands (octave apart) in parallel motion. This doesn't require any real finesse, and it gets the blood flowing in your arms which in turn helps your hands. Play it fast from one end of the keyboard to the other and with any dynamic you prefer. [Linked Image]

There are some "away from the piano" warm ups that pianists can do before performing... Ask your teacher!

Cold hands always seem to bother me. I get this problem where my hands become really really cold yet really sweaty. I usually place my hands in my pockets to keep them warm and occasionally wipe the sweat off.

Years ago I read a bio of Josef & Rosina Lhevinne. When the Lhevinnes were still in Russia before the Bolshevik Revolution, Josef would sometimes plunge his hands into snowbanks to "wake them up."

At the other extreme was Glenn Gould who soaked his hands and wrists in hot water before performing. I have sometimes had to do this myself in the winter simply to restore circulation.

I'm not a regular performer by any means, but I do need to wash my hands in warm water as close to my performance as possible.
