Can anyone recommend 1 or more piano dealers in the Chicago area? Preferably someone in the northwest or west suburbs? I hope its not inappropriate to ask for such recommendations.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Kurt Saphir Pianos in Wilmette. Great pianos, great service. I got my CW there and would buy from them again in a heart-beat.

Your request is not inappropriate at all, TJF, and I'm sure others will chime in with more recommendations. There are a number of well-known dealers throughout Chicagoland. Lucky you for getting to shop in that market!

I'm visiting downtown Chicago this weekend (leave early am tomorrow) and would also like to know of downtown stores.
Not meant to hijack OPs thread though,
Thanks,
Mike

I've looked at Petrof at Pickle Piano in Bloomingdale, Estonia at Cordogan's store in Geneva (the Deerfield store will be closing) and Kawaii at Naperville Music on Odgen Ave in Naperville. (Only because these were the three pianos I was focussing on--obviously they carry other brands). I had a favorable impression of all three places--very pleasant and informative people. I haven't bought yet, so can't comment beyond the shopping phase.

Pianoforte is the only store downtown - but you probably shoudl call ahead to make sure someone is there. They are usually in during business hours - but not always...

Ron, that used Astin-Weight they have in their listings is a stunner. On the other hand, a piano that has basically sat on a showroom floor for 19 years... would that raise a red flag with you?

Either way, thanks for the new bookmark.

Hi,
I too live in Chicago and will begin the great piano hunt soon. I searched PW forums plus did all the google searching, etc. to make a list of dealers in the area. They are pretty spread out. I think I have most of the makes correctly assigned to dealers. I'm copying the list I have below. I hope this helps. I've not actually started visiting places, though, so cannot comment based on any personal experience.

FWIW, I have attempted to identify a Chicago dealer for Hailun. Haven't found one. Wrote the people at Hailun (Aspire@HailunUSA.com) three times, and they never wrote back. Business must be good.

Anyway, those of you who are actually visiting Chicago-area piano dealers, if you come across one who stocks this brand, let me know. Based on what I've read in these forums, I would like to give them a try.

Family Piano in Waukegan is a Sauter Dealer. I believe they are also a Hailun dealer.

Heh, go figure. Couldn't get a response to my emails themselves... I guess I could have called, but if they aren't going to answer an email, why bother posting it? All I wanted to know was whether there were any Hailun dealers around Chicago. Anyway, one day after mentioning here that I hadn't heard back on this question, I got an email.

This could be a total coincidence, of course, but in any event, I didn't want it to unreported. I look forward to trying out some of these...

Always,

Glad you got a response. You do bring up a good point though about using email to communicate with dealers.

I have been frustrated more than once using this method of communication with dealers myself. I'm in the IT business and using email is SOP. I'm guessing that many dealers are either VERY technologically challenged or they don't believe that electronic communication (email or web) is an integral part of their sales/marketing strategy. Very frustrating.

Steve Pearson, who operates the Nordiska and Steingraeber dealership in Crete, IL announced yesterday at a concert event I help organize, that he's closing shop. Which is a real loss for the Chicago area. He has supplied the pianos for our Tinley Park event for the past 4 years and hosted numerous free concerts and recitals in his shop, many of which I recorded and posted here on PianoWorld and as YouTube videos.

On the brighter side, Steve indicated he and his wife, who is also an RPT, will continue their tuning and prep services and will maintain their relationships with GIC and Steingraeber and other Chicago-area dealers such as PianoForte. I suggested he explore opening an authorized Internet piano shopping basket. Ha, ha. He did say there would be a going out of business sale.

He didn't. He just announced near the end of the show that he has marked everything down and is closing shop. My wife mentioned that she saw sale tags on all the pianos when she was giving lessons in his shop last week.
