Just to put on my serious cap for a moment, I really wonder whether the film (and the original play) did more net harm than good to Mozart's image. Mozart is certainly far more than the "eternal child" as Solomon puts it, but Amadeus does nothing but perpetuate this myth (along with all the other fiction).

Die Krebs gehn zurucke,
Die Stockfisch bleiben dicke,
Die Karpfen viel fressen,
Die Predigt vergessen.

Die Predigt hat g'fallen.
Sie bleiben wie alle.

The problem is, that both fans of Amadeus and haters of it forget that the play is written from the perspective of an Unreliable Narrator , and one who utterly despises Mozart at that. Of course the portrayal of his character is going to be distorted!

I personally love Amadeus as a story, it's just a shame there seem to be a lot of people who don't get the STORY part and come away from it either offended or believing it to be historical fact. *sigh*

I loved the movie, it's a great story. And I recognize the historical inaccuracies.

Well, there it is.

That really *was* good. Or maybe it's the beer. Dunno... I'll watch it again tomorrow.

A clever comment.
Never confuse the writer with the narrator.

Haha very funny, I have this on my cell phone. smile

I don't believe in the image Amadeus provided for Mozart, but I find it a great movie, and it is always a pleasure to watch it no matter how inaccurate it is.

Exactly. Also remember that before it became a Milos Forman film, it was a Peter Shaffer play. In both cases, Amadeus is not really about Mozart so much as it is about Salieri. The fictionalized movie/play presents the very biased subjective viewpoint of one composer greatly envying the other. It was Salieri who so wanted to be "loved by God"(which, of course, is what Amadeus means in Latin).

She was with me even in my grave
When the last of my friends turned away,
And she sang like the first storm heaven gave.
Or as if flowers were having their say.

I've never actually seen this movie but it's my vocal teacher's favourite. Now it's just a matter of finding a copy of it to watch and perhaps someone to watch it with...
