I listened to this symphony for the 1st time today (sad I know) and the tune sounds really familiar. Is it from a movie?

Well...DvorŠk didn't really write for film. laugh

But I know what you mean...

Someone adapted the theme for the Big Screen. Don't know which movie though.

The tune has also been made into at least one choral arrangement.

Are you sure the two of you are talking about the same movement? The second movement of the 9th Symphony "Largo," has had many vocal reincarnations, solo and choral, under the title of "Goin' Home", but I've not heard of a choral arrangement of the fourth momvement. Which, by the way, doesn't mean that there isn't one, of course.

Regards,

It was used very effectively as a frightening motif in a film about a case of mental illness caused by a mother abusing her daughter. The mother used to continually belt it out on the piano.

I cannot remember the name of the film but it was based on real people.

John Williams used the opening of the 4th movement as the basis for the theme for Jaws. It also provided him with his inspiration for Starwars - this is the more recognizable one and is probably what your thinking of.

I'm personally convinced that the 2nd moement (the largo) is where Howard shore got his inspiration for the Hobbit/Shire theme music in the Lord of the Rings.

Oh yeah - the Largo is what I'm thinking about.

But the main theme of the last movement is also famous, as has been stated here.

I performed an organ transcription of the N.W. Symphony - in Prague!

So, I should be more cognizant of which theme is where...

From Wikipedia:

As with other popular themes, the main theme from the symphony set in the early 1900's to words in a popular arrangement called "Summer Days".
Neil Armstrong took this symphony to the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission, the first Moon landing mission, in 1969.
The Symphony's second movement is well known in Britain for being featured in a 1974 commercial for Hovis bread, directed by Ridley Scott.
In the anime One Piece, the 4th movement plays during the final battle between Monkey D. Luffy and Mr. 0.
The symphony is used in the Studio Ghibli short film The Night of Taneyamagahara.
