Hello,

I am looking for an upright. I currently have a digital.

I looked at some uprights - is the Weinbach 114I decent?

How about the Kawaii K25 or Petrof 115I?

If anyone would share their opinions regarding these 3 uprights,
I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

SK99

I just purchased a new Weinbach 114IC. I chose it because when I played it it was like I wasn't struggling, the piano cooperated with me. The sound was nice, not bright and sharp like some pianos. The walnut finish on mine is very nice.

I haven't had it long enough to make more of a judgement. It still hasn't had its first tuning.

I played the same Petrof (I guess it was a 115 vs 114) in the same showroom. I didn't care that much for the action but from what I hear they are exactly the same piano so it was probably just a individual differences I was detecting.

I like Kawais, I tried the UST-8C and the K25. Both were nice, the sound was nice, the actions on the Kawais were super smooth and seemed very precise. However I felt like I was buying a Toyota, not at all exciting, I bought the Weinbach.

Hi Sk99,

I bought a Weinbach P124 last year as my first acoustic (going from a digital), and I love it. It is the same as a Petrof on the inside, but the case is plainer, so it it a little less expensive. I chose the Weinbach because I like the mellow sound and the action felt right to me. The Kawai sound didn't do anything for me.

It took me a few visits to piano stores before I could discern a difference between the sounds of the different brands.

I didn't care for the bass on uprights that were not at least 48" tall. I could easily detect that the bass was better on taller pianos of all makes. This is the reason I bought the taller Weinbach instead of the shorter one.

If you peruse the existing threads here, you will see that while there is some general agreement about how piano brands are ranked in terms of quality, the selection of the "right" piano is dependent on the action that you like and the sound that you like. The tuners have said my Weinbach is a nice piano, but they might say that about every piano!

Frank, thanks for your input. I just saw the picture of your Weinbach - very nice! I visited my first piano store today -- I was a bit overwhelmed! I tried many pianos and after a while some of them started to sound the same.

It's going to take me a little time to figure out what I really like. So far, I could tell the difference between a louder piano and softer due to it's size (taller=louder). I prefer a more mellow sound - don't like the bright too much.

Meredith, thank you too for your input. Do you mind if I ask you where you bought your piano? I noticed that you're in San Diego, as am I!
What stores are there around San Diego that I should check out?

By the way, the Weinbach 114I was on sale for $4k NOT including tax and delivery. Is that a good deal?

Thank you.

SK99

$4000 is 43% off list. This is an EXCEPTIONALLY good price assuming this is a new piano. If you like the piano and the delivery charge seems reasonable go for it. Petrof/Weinbach are one of the few makes that do not include a bench in their price, so plan on spending a few hundred extra for one. The Petrof upright I played at a local dealer had a very nice mellow tone, but I don't remember which model it was as I was primarily looking at grands.

I think in normal situation, it is always better to buy Wenbach than Petrof. The same quality -lower price. Good luck
