OK, I admit it. I'm dense. But I don't get the title "When will the pain end?" in context to the post.

Because it's an obvious mistake that screams out, hurting my poor, Liszt-adoring heart.

Seeing as we are on opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, I see no other option than to refer you to my soon to be appointed propaganda minister for further communication. (hint-hint, Diarmuid)

I accept the role with great honour comrade. Together we shall glorify the Masters name and fight his vile detractors. Those wretched, bourgeois Chopinists will be no match for our superior wit and reasoning.

Of course List could beat Chopin in a fight anyday. Chopin is sensitive, melodic and beautiful. List :p is coarse, unrefined and bombastic with no sense of substance. Sort of like Mike Tyson (List) vs. Mikhail
Barishnakov.

Musique de List est tres mal, mal, mal!

Pardon mon francais.

President pour la vie.

Somewhat true, yes, but that doesn't negate the fact that he could easily suplex Chopin off of the top rope.

Could be fun to watch a 'piano-duel' though smile

Sorry about my bad Danish wink
Must ad a bit of bad french on top of that!

of course chopin would never beat listz in a fight... chopin would just gracefully stand back and let Ltsiz take all the limelight which he craves for so desperately...

p.s. the lzist mispellings were done on purpose...=]

PAH! Liszt would triumph over Chopin in any field! Chopin was nothing but an obsequious sycophant, pandering to the tastes of Parisian society with twee waltzes and trifling, frivolous etudes.

Liszt was a TITAN! Pure of heart, noble in reason, unconstrained by convention, he soared above the masses blazing a trail through the heavens...Oh Franz! FRANZ! HOW THEY MALAIGN YOU!...quickly comrade the valium.

Accuse me, if you will, of having no sense of humor, (this is supposed to be funny?) but I fail to see what purpose is served by degrading this forum with this kind of sophomoric exchange!

I hereby accuse you of having no sense of humor.

Although my command of the English language is but a mere fraction of the unequivocal sapience and lucidity of thought that my comrade-in-arms, Dairmuid, posses, I am morally obliged to nonetheless hither to my predilection for Liszt's music and articulate my feelings on said composer to my antagonists in the most astute, forthright manner possible.

God forbid we make light of things.

I am throwing my dictionary out and just coming to this place to learn new words! I have already learned a large liszt of words.. (pun intented). We cannot overlook the fact that Chopin was an invert, he only played in small salons and had a fear of the public. He had no where as many notable pupils as Liszt, who went out of his way to help his art. That is where the comparison ends, because it is futile to try and compare them, both are composers of the first rank, the better one is that which you think suits you best. wink

with apologies to Bruce,

Let's stop getting all mushy. It seems incredulous to me that one who loves Chopin could also love the "king of notes".

Andrew, I need a VP for life very badly. We need to build a lizst of followers.

Brendan,

As a liszt-less lisztentious illiszterati of the Liszt liszturgy, does your laudable largesse allow liszting for me a liszt of Liszt’s labors passing the listzmus test of being playable with my leszt than lithe fingers?

Surely you show sagacity and sapience in your submitted query, yet skepticism seeps into my soul. Should I supply you such a lis(z)t of the sounds that shower my heart with sunlight, or is this a sickening spy-mission by a Chopinist to sour my sentiments?

Sooner than see my sorrows become stone-thick sediments in my heart and succumb to your seemingly simple question would I rather sink into a pit of snakes. So...instead let me share with you a new favorite composer of mine:

Saint-Saens

Uncle! UNCLE! No more, please!

I should have known better, although I was especially pleased with the term "Liszt Liszturgy"...

wink

P.S. I *would* like a list of simple pieces for playing by an early intermediate level of pianist (me), if such a thing exists. Seems like I saw you or someone post a few suggestions in an earlier post somewhere.

A cutecomer [otherwise known as "costumer"]
just called me relating to this conversation
which he was only too eager to read, less
eager to comment or post himself.....
To burst the bubble, he said: Jerry Lee Lewis
would've socked it to both of'em!!!
What kind of death penalty would this high
audience recommend in this case? I couldn't!
Remember: he is a "cutecomer" !

Well, it seems like a good time to join in.
I have just heard for the first time (forgive the spelling; but the CD is in the car) the Georges Czuiff....?? recording for the Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies. They sure are not lacking in excitement! smile I've heard him mentioned many times here. His other playing, and I've not heard much, is VERY erratic, even strange.

I visited Charleston, SC last week. I went to a music store there; and playing 2 new Yamahas....both 9-footers. One was out of tune, and not fun to play. The other had just gotten tuned, and playing almost effortlessly. But talk about being bright! Yikes! I'm sure it has been a full 10 yrs since I played the larger models. The action on both were good, and very even. But I just couldn't get past the brightness. How much of this can a tech change??? They were not priced; and I could just kick myself for not asking. The Steinway L, in the same room, sure sounded different in comparison.

BTW, if you're ever in Charleston, visit Millennium Music in Mt. Pleasant. It's a CD store with a great selection.

Sincerely,
Eldon

Mushy, MUSHY! I meant they're human beings (i.e. fallible) and I love them both (as composers!). Guess that could have been put better laugh

But why would appreciation of them be mutually exclusive? And why this visceral loathing of Liszt? You go after him like he was some kind of Nazi!

Dan the "Consolations" are very nice and not too difficult. Also some of the late pieces are hauntingly beautiful and not technically difficult.

A huge field, two spots in the center of the screen. The camera is panning to show the desert state of the place.
Camera is zooming in fast.
The spots where Pianos, two of them. Chopin is on the right while Liszt(Sorry i'm french : ) is on the left. The pianos are in poor shape. All cover with muds, wooden pieces have explosed. The musical fight has been bloody. Liszt is beeing amputated of his left arm by a doctor. He said "sorry Lil, can't save it !! You'll have to keep your jaws tight while I'll axe it off".
But Lil is coarse, and strong.
Chopin, the vilain, thinks of using this interlude to send in his final vilain attack the allegro of the Prelude In C Sharp Minor, Op.45. And sharp it is i'm telling you. Everyone knows not to stay in the battlefield but our friend lil does not fear any frog eater. So he opens up his umbrella and prepare to offers his counter attack ..........................................................................................................
We now know that liszt is in very bad shape, Chopin who is just tired and vile has the advantage. What will happen ??? Will Lyl able to survive the Prelude after the Interlude?? Chopin Knows the figth is not over and will his Prelude after the interlude work although his Grand Piano has no more than 5 White keys still working !!!!

See us in the next improbable episode of
Lil vs ChopChop.

Oh by the way bruce. I like Humor(which might not be exactly shown in the above ; ), because it brings life and emulation in a forum.

Booboo the story teller(who wait forward for spielberg phone call : )

Brendan, both Hillary and I felt your pain as soon as we saw the announcment. I took the liberty of sending said announcement directly to Jaw Leno's Tonite Show Headlines address and hope that the larger audience seeing it there will be reminded to pay more respect to our bridges to the past.
Reminded me of my boyhood in Hope, where among my Saturday chores, visiting the woodshed to finish the chopin was high on the liszt.
