Too bad it has to be the "best"; otherwise I could recommend a recording. frown

Cheers!

I think the tibetan buddhist call this obsexxion with the best "Materialistic spiritualism". laugh

In French, we say, "Plus modeste que moi, tu meurs ".
I wonder if you know that one, BruceD.

I agree with BrudeD.
Stop calling these threads "Best.."
"Favorite...", or "Recommendations for..." would be better. That's what you're asking anyway. Sorry to split hairs.

Wow, you guys are being REALLY helpful. Just tell him a good recording instead of fussing over the wording.

Glenn Gould's recordings are nice.

Actually, in Beaver's defense, he said "Best RecordINGS" PLURAL. He didn't ask for THE best recordING. Since the word "best" all depends on the eye of the beholder, anybody who submits their list of favorite recordings or recommendations (which are the BEST for that individual), Beaver asked a perfectly valid question.

Deus:

More or less my point. Can there really be bests of anything, recordings included? What's wrong with a good recording - or, good recordings?

Huh?

There can definitely be bests of things, but it varies from person to person...my '97 Ford Escort is the best car for me because I own it, and I can afford to maintain and insure it. However a 2004 Lamborghini Diablo would be a horrible choice for me, seeing as how I would have to steal it, and then couldn't even afford to maintain it! And nothing's wrong with a good recording...in fact, I listen to them almost exclusively. thumb

I expected the title to be taken as 'favorite', though personally I do believe in objectivity.

I have the Gould and the Perahia recordings. I like the Gould better.

Richter made some, which I quite like.

To moderate, perhaps we can have a democratic thread where we all say what we like and don't like about them individually.

I have the Gould recordings, which have a really good rhythmic verve to them, and are very precise. I feel it represents the best elements of his playing.

The other recording I know, the Perahia, is more fluid and melodic, but less contrapuntal and perhaps less lively as a result. It's quite typical of what Perahia tends to do with Bach, but that said, I like his solo Bach better (whereas perhaps the opposite is true with the Gould). Nevertheless, he comes through with that glowing tone he's become so famous for, as usual.

Well, I tried not to just say I liked the Gould better, anyway. smile

Personally, I find the Richter recordings a little bland. I think the recording by Angela Hewitt would have to be my favourite.
