I'm looking at the Alban Berg set (1985 recording) and the Amadeus Quartet. Among these two, which do you guys prefer? Any other suggestions?

I have the Early and Middle Quartets (Opp. 18, 59, 74, and 95) played by the Quartetto Italiano on Philips, and the Late Quartets (Opp. 127, 130, 131, 132 and 135) played by the Guarneri Quartet on RCA Victor Gold Seal. All seem to be fine interpretations.

Regards,

I like the Alban Berg recording, although you shouldn't trust my opinion, considering that I've only heard the recordings in question.

I have the following and am very happy with it:

http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Com...mp;s=music&qid=1201639837&sr=8-1

Though it looks like availability would be an issue. Still, through Amazon you can get a used copy for about 37 bucks including shipping...

Have you tried the Emmerson Quartet?
I also like the Vogler Quartet.

I'd like to upload The Lindsays' playing a bit of op. 127 (3rd movement), but nevermind. There are others that suffice, just avoid the Quartetto Italiano as a first choice in the late quartets. Their renderings are rather tame and there is no sense of wonder, at least to my ears.

I have the Vermeer Quartet. I've had it for years, so it may not be available any longer. I've never listened for purposes of comparison to other recordings, but I find the overall sound to be a little raucous and edgy.

They're tops. I heard them live several years ago- what a concert! Very stiring performance of the Shostakovich 4th.

There are a number of gems among the Lindsay Quartet Recordings on ASV. Trouble is I don't know if they are still available.

Oh yes, the Vermeer! They're second place to the Emerson in my book. I got to know the late quartets through their recording.

The Rasumovsky's? They are some of Beethovens greatest music, IMHO.
My brother plays in a string quartet. They rehearse about 20 hours per week. They are called the Vesuvius Quartet. If you ever get a chance to hear them perform, take it. They are very good. They were at the Perlman music camp this summer and got to spend a fair bit of time with the great man himself. Lol they haven't recorded the complete Beethoven quartets quite yet but hopefully one day!
