I've come to love this performance from The Concert of the Century in 1976. All I can find on YT is the first movement, Pezzo Elegiaco.

Amazon has the recording (which has much more than just this performance). It's on my quicklist for my next order. cool

They only played the trio of the Tchaikovsky at this concert. Horowitz also accompanied Fisher-Dieskau in Schumann's Dicterliebe. But the high point of the concert was when VH and Rostropovich played the slow movement from Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata. It's worth the price of the entire album.

The composers want performers be imaginative, in the direction of their thinking--not just robots, who execute orders.

Reportedly in more than one way. One would never want to be without such a remarkable meeting of great minds, yet various issues of 'rubato', etc were not really addressed.

Obviously this was all done 'on the run', two great prima donnas making their respective statements, but it wasn't really a satisfying 'whole'. Take away the magic of those names, and it was all rather dodgy.
