In your opinion what are some of the best music schools/ conservatories in the country?

I have heard Pebody (spelling!) is good, of course Julliard, New England Conservatory, etc.

More important than the institution ultimately, I think is the teacher.

I agree. My teacher explained to me that its almost like residency for a pianist. You watch other people, and see what makes them tick, and see how they play and analyze it, and play of course! The environment (students around you) may affect it a lot too.

Thracozaag is exactly right. The teachers make all the difference in the world. If you can meet and talk to some faculty members or better yet, get involved with some musical event on campus, like a masterclass, by all means do, because things like that tell you a LOT about a school.

Raspberry liqueur, apparently. :p

Just wondering for those who do not live in Australia, I just wanted to know how well WAAPA is (the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts) known, just curious if people actually know if it exists... or if it's one of those places you never hear of outside of Australia.

While the teacher really is probably the most important factor (you will be miserable if you don't have a good one), I have found that I learn almost just as much from being around other talented students, which you are only likely to find in a major music school. While I don't think it really matters whether your school is ranked #1 or #5, you should try to go somewhere where the general talent level matches your own if you want to get the most out of the experience.
