I have been waiting for this set for about 30 years! The Chopin Nocturnes, Waltzes, Ballades, and Scherzos, recorded by Tamas Vasary back in the early to mid-60s, have just been reissued by DGG in their "Trio" series -- and inexpensive, too!

I have always loved the Rubinstein recordings, and associate him with having put the masculine element back into Chopin. So I wouldn't really say anything bad about them.

But if you want to put the dreamy, sensitive, idiosyncratic back into Chopin, with a pianist in absolute full control over every turn, every trill, Vasary (a Hungarian pianist) is the one to listen to. I put on the Opus 27 for my 11-year-old daughter/pianist last night, and she couldn't leave the room.

I had many of these recordings on 33s back in the old days. I am SO happy to have them again. My only regret is that they didn't include Vasary's unmatchable reading of the 2nd Sonata (the funeral march).

Barnes and Noble has them for about $20.

Let me add that Vasary expounds the piano part in the Brahms piano quartets with very great distinction in a recording made back in the 60's with first-desk players from the Berlin Philharmonic. I'm sure the recording is long out of print, which is a shame, since his feeling for Brahms is special.

Ok, Shantinik:
I've ordered this from BN.COM - solely on your recommendation. I hope it's good!

Of course, to get FREE shipping, I had to order a second item. I ordered Lipatti's album:
Lipatti

because it has the Barcarolle for piano in F sharp major. I have this on vinyl & haven't tried to record it on CD, yet! But I consider this to be an excellent recording!! laugh laugh

If you decide you don't like them, you can come fast on my doorstep. (but I'm not in the least worried, these really are extraordinary!)

Thanks. I remember the Vasary recordings from the 70's with great fondness. Never could understand why he didn't have a more prominent career.

In the video "Great Pianists of the 20th century", Vasary comments on many different pianists, but he does not play on that particular tape. I have heard his Chopin, and I think its fantastic.

I left town for several days & when I got back -- only 1/2 of my order had shipped!! frown -- Unfortunately, the Vasary is on back order !
Their website doesn't even give me any clue as to when the plan to ship! I guess for the time being I still have the new Lipatti CD...

updates to follow....

Stuck_Key, you could cancel that part of your order and then order the CD at Amazon.com. It says it ships in 3-4 days. Usually when something goes on back order it will take 4-6 weeks, and you probably don't want to wait that long. Here\'s the link.

Also, you could order from one of their Marketplace sellers. There's a link on that page to buy it new for $22.94 and the seller says it's in stock.

I guess I spoke too soon -- My Vasary Chopin recordings arrived in today's mail! laugh

I'll have the weekend to listen to them -- I have a bit of a road trip, so that should be an excellent time! (Oklahoma scenery get's really boring by itself after about 10 min's!)

Thanks for the info anyway, Jeffy. Amazon really does have eCommerce down. They usually ship my items the next business day -- & since I live within 1 shipping day of one of their warehouses, it usually arrives in 1 day by ground! laugh
(BN.com took a week before they even shipped the first CD -- not sure if they're always that way!)

I did some searching on the internet & really couldn't find anything on Vasary. I'm really not familiar with him. (Actually, the search turned up some matches on both chinese & spanish web pages -- but that doesn't help me any!)

Well, Shantinik, the CD's are Wonderful!

Some of the Waltz's I had not heard in quite a while!! -- They made some great traveling music. (Although I think some were taken a little faster than intended?) But he certainly has great technique.

Is he still alive? How come we never he much of him?

Vasary for the past 10 years has been conductor of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. He seems to have made a commitment to rebuilding the Hungarian musical community, which was decimated by defections during the "bad years" following the Hungarian Revolution. So I think he also ran a music school and conservatory. As a result, I think he traveled much less.

I love the way he does the Opus 62 #4 waltz, where he reverses the tempi of how we usually hear the repeated first thematic material. Fast the first time, and then lovingly slowed and full of rubato the second and third time through. Currently, my fave is the F minor Ballade -- his recording is like hearing music wholly new and for the first time!

My daughter latched on to the E Minor Nocturne (Opus 72 No. 1) -- she says she knows it as the music from "The Secret Garden", and she's happily playing away!

Now if they'd only re-release the Second Sonata....
