Having sat ABRSM grade 8 recently, and having an ambition/goal to ultimately sit the dip ABRSM performance diploma, I'm naturally curious as to what would be considered a reasonable time-scale for this venture.
I fully appreciate that performance diplomas are a different 'kettle of fish' to grade exams, so I'm not expecting to attempt this in a few months !!!! ... I've seen a web posting somewhere from one teacher who rightfully complained about students treating dip ABRSM like 'grade 9 ' when it is (in that teacher' opinion) more like 'grade 12' ; my own teacher has described it as "double the difficulty level of grade 8" ....
- the AB state it is the standard of a student after one year at a consrvatoire (or words to the effect) - given such students practise several hours a day this gives a clue....
I'm just curious to hear from anyone who has done the dipABRSM how long after grade 8 this was, and how much daily practise came into the equation ?
thank TP

I haven't taken the exam but I have a rough idea of what is required. The recital itself is I believe 35 minutes long, and you are given a repetoire list to choose pieces from - the difficulty varies, and there are pieces not far off from the Grade 8 sylabbus, and pieces that are noticably more difficult. I think the difficulty comes in programming a recital which is balanced and plays to your own strengths, and the length - while the pieces themselves might not be more difficult, it takes a lot more effort to prepare that quantity, and depending on your ability it could take you a whole year to learn the pieces. Take any practise time comments with a pinch of salt - just concentrate on practising however much you feel comfortable with, and don't worry about how much other people practise. The same goes for the comment about the standard of pupils that sit the exam, not all students are at the same level after a year at a conservetoire!
I think you can get a repetoire list at the ABRSM website for the current exam - listen/try out some of the pieces and see whether you think you could manage them, and then consider how many pieces it would take to fill the 35 mins. I think its better to overprepare than to underprepare, so just work on the pieces you would want to play (check with your teacher as for your choices etc) without any pressure of the exam, and then when you feel ready (as undoubtably they ask for a higher level of interpretation than at grade 8..) to perform them in a recital, then you can start really polishing them and getting ready for the exam. The problem you have is 'burning out' on the way, so you would definitely want to pick up some other pieces along the way, hence why I think its a better idea to not treat it as a group of pieces you are learning for an exam, but just a group of pieces you are learning because you enjoy them, and then work on the exam part once you are comfortable with them.
I think I've nattered on for long enough now, and I hope you find some of it useful!

Tim, Have a look at the ABRSM forums (somewhere on www.abrsm.org), there is lots of good info there. I seem to remember reading there that the average time between Grade 8 and a DipABRSM pass was two years. I am toying with the idea of entering for summer 2007. I downloaded the repertoire lists about a year ago from the web page and had started to put together some ideas of a programme[1], though since upping my practice time per day, I've got distracted into other works in the meantime, many of which are on the LRSM lists . PS. I too took Grade 8 (and got a reasonable distinction), but that was in 1980... Best regards, -Michael B. [1] Along the lines of (though not necessarily in this order): * Bach BVW 878 (P&F E major WTC II) * Beethoven Op10#1 (or 14#1 or Op26) * Schumann Novellette #1 * Chopin Impromptu #2 * Brahms Intermezzo Op118#2 * Hindemith Interludium & Fuga 3 (Ludus Tonalis)

I'm working on a Trinity diploma of sorts which I presume is around the same standard, although the program has to be only 27 minutes long if memory serves. I've been working on it for nearly a year now, after sitting ABRSM Grade 6. I'm not sure how much longer it will take before I'm ready, but I think my piano teacher is presuming that I will sit it before starting Uni/going off on a gap year, which is just over a year away. So about two years.

I am working on a Trinity ATCL recital Diploma. Has to be 30-35 minutes long. Good thing cause there is no sight reading, ear tests or scales.
The pieces I am doing are:
1. Bach - Prelude and fuge in f sharp minor. 2. Mozart - Sonata in C minor K457 3. Chopin - Fantasie Impromptu 4. Rachmaninoff - Liebesleid.
Only started learning these pieces a few months ago. It's going to take me at least another year or so for me to perfect them.

Ah, that's the same one I'm doing, except I may do the performance instead of the recital.
I'm doing the same Mozart and Rachmaninoff pieces, and Kinderszenen.
