Hi all,

I was wondering what the best editions for Widmung (Schumann-Liszt) and Auf dem Wasser zu singen (Schubert-Liszt) are? I'm having trouble locating what versions are available. I want to play them together following The Tempest sonata, Widmung then Auf dem Wasser zu singen.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve :

I guess the "best" edition of these works is the Editio Musica Budapest. The only one I have is the volume of Schubert transcriptions of Schwanengesang(14 songs) and Winterreise (12 songs); several years ago this volume cost $40.00US. It is catalog number Z. B 13 358, and its full title is Klavierwerke Transkriptionen VI, obviously the sixth volume in their series of transcriptions by Liszt. Since "Auf dem Wasser zu singen" is not in this volume, I presume it to be in their volume V, Schubert and Rossini transcriptions, catalog number Z. B 13 357

If you buy the Peters edition (Cat No. 3602a), you'll get 19 Schubert songs, 2 Schumann songs (including "Widmung" - which is called "Liebeslied" in this edition - 3 Beethoven songs, 6 Chopin songs, 1 song each by Lassen and Liszt, and 2 Mendelssohn songs. Liszt Klavierwerke Band IX, Lieder-Bearbeitungen

Schirmer used to publish a two-volume edition of Schubert songs, 25 in all, as well as a number of them published individually. I don't know if they are still available in that format from Schirmer. The two volume set is Schubert Songs Transcribed for the Piano by Franz Liszt, Book I and Book II, catalog numbers 128 and 129.

Regards,

I read your post on Liszt's song transcriptions and knew how much respect you had for these works...I wondered if it might be you that responded to this. smile By "best" I really mean urtext edition..wasn't very clear. But, given the cost of Editio Musica Budapest, I'll probably go with the Peters edition. Thanks for the info!

For the Liszt transcriptions of Schubert songs, I use Schirmer. The Schumann Widmung, this is the one I bought. http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?cart=33487592783026185&item=3200019

For Schubert-Liszt, I use Kalmus.

Dover edition of the Schubert-Liszt is also good but hard to read.

Thanks for everybody's help here...I've decided to go with the Peters edition because it has so much to offer...although it is expensive, at about 38 bucks. eek

How about Liszt transcription of Saint-Saens Danse Macabre on your list? smile
