Maybe I'm being ridiculous, but is it too much to ask to have a decent piano for a gr. 10 RCM exam? The piano I had to play was deceivingly junky. It was a 7-foot yamaha, polished and shiny, but it was painfully out of tune and the soft pedal held random notes like a sustain pedal would. This threw me off my concentration in the middle of my Bach Prelude (which I played first) where I used the soft pedal to try and terrace dymanics to a degree. It just sounded awful.

This might be an exception to the normal standards I would hope to be set by the RCM, so I was wondering if anybody had similar experiences or complaints.

I don't need a house. As long as I get an 11-foot concert steinway, I can live in it's humidity control box...

Did you complain to the judge?

I pointed out what was wrong with the soft-pedal, but she seemed to think it wasn't a big deal and was somewhat rude about it.

Then I think you should contact the heads of RCM because playing on an untuned piano is completely ridiculous.

Yeah, let the RCM people know about it - they'll go nuts.

Hi, DylanP:

Sorry to hear of your exam woes. I can relate. I took my last exam (only Gr. 2) in Pennsylvania rather than in Canada. The piano originally intended for use in the exam was horrendous. I discovered this the week before and created a bit of a stink. They changed pianos, but the overall circumstances were still far from ideal. I was luckly enough to have a wonderful examiner who made generous allowances.

One thing I learned is that you can petition for a repeat exam. If they agree that your piano had issues, they will award you the highest of the two exam grades.

Sympathies and best wishes in finding an equitable solution!

This is disgusting.

Once I did an exam at Sydney Con, and played a Messiaen Prelude on a piano so out of tune that one low note was a whole semitone flat, and actually the wrong note!

But I did tell the examiners.

I think you only shut up about crazy pianos when you are the accompanist. Then it's not about you, (as they say in the soapies)
