Hello Everyone!
I returned to the piano after a 2-1/2 decade hiatus and have fallen in love with Mr. Kabalevsky's music. I've mastered "Fairy Tale" and now am endeavoring to do the same with "Clowns" and one other that I can't recall right now- my teacher played it and my spine literally tingled during a passage.
Question: I learn a piece mush faster if I can hear the piece. My teacher doesn't always do this so are their any CD's out there of Kabalevsky's shorter works like the ones I've listed. I subscribe to MYSHEETMUSIC.COM but only "Clowns" is available to download.
Look forward to any and all responses.
Cheers,
Graham

Under Olympia label pianist Murray McLachlan recorded a few CDs that're dedicated to Kabalevsky's piano music. Your best best is to try some online site under other obscure labels to try your luck. One of them is Berkshire...

The RCM recordings (and books) by Frederick Harris have quite a lot of Kabalevsky pieces, icluding "Clowns" (celebration series #3)....unfortunately only 1 per book/cd! I know I've seen a web site for a small recording label that specialized in 'smaller' pieces that are hard to find recordings of; but I can't find it right now. I THOUGHT it might be Academy Records, but am having trouble getting their web site. Also Peters has a 'young classic edition' (book and cd) series that might/might not have what you're looking for.
Wish I could help more; if my memory kicks in cool and I find something, I'll let you know!

Susan

I got it! Just about to get off the computer and it came to me; a pianist named Diane Hidy (and yes, for Academy Records), has recorded Kabalevsky's "30 Children's Pieces", and "Op.27, 24 Little Pieces". I would bet that what you're looking for would be there. She has a web site http://www.wcl.org/hidy.html ; maybe you can access Academy Records through there.
Also http://www.piano-pal.com/Kjosmcl.htm , look under Kabalevsky.
Good luck!
Susan

Isn't Kabalevsky wonderful. From Op 27, I enjoy playing Novelette. It was well rec'd at my recital (by the parents of my fellow students!)

I have found some others of his works in various collections that my teacher gives me for lessons. They include,
"Encore! Standard Lit. That Motivates" by Alfred Pub. and "The Anthology of Piano Music Vol 4 The Twentieth Century" Edited by Denes Agay , Yorktown Press.

My question is why weren't we exposed to him when we first took lessons all those years ago (late 60's early 70's) He seems to have been around long before then. Was he not widely published then or was the old John Thompson's the only accepted method?

I seem to remember learning some Kabalevsky pieces as a child from either John W. Schaum books or Belwin books. My teacher liked variety, so we used John Thompson, Belwin AND Schaum. Anyway, I remember liking the pieces very much. wink
