Sam --

Thanks for posting this -- I had no idea he'd released this DVD. He's one of the giants. Just placed my order. What kind of music is the Komitas -- fast forward or worth a listen?

Ah yes...this has been on my wishlist for some time. Just added it to my queue at Netflix...which is a place I HIGHLY recommend to anyone that enjoys music performances such as this. They have an excellent selection.

Hehe, looks like everybody takes your recommendations to heart, Sam. wink However, I wont dish out the money JUST yet. I should really start listening to alive pianists though; I'm so stuck on Ricther, Gould, Horowitz and the bunch that by the time a feel like I need an alternative to them (highly doubtful :p ) these guys (Sokolov and such) will all be gone when I get started on them. (And I would really like to become an avid fan of at least one, so I can be in heaven when I go see him or her live in concert)

Btw, how's the Prokofiev?

Well... the first one at least has a very interesting melody, both hands together. Very soft and slow. I actually went on PW during those dances to read and comment on some posts! I'll probably give them a serious listen sometime, though.

Amazing. He plays very well. It's interesting to watch him play, too - His hands are like rubber, especially in the third movement: they just bounce right off the keys (and they bounce quite high).

The Prokofiev is the apex of this recital, IMHO.

I think I shall order my first DVD performance. I guess I better do some browsing first though, hey? Pogorelich's new DVD just came out I believe (Bach, Beethoven, Scarlatti). Are there any other recommendations for must have DVD's out there? i'm leaning towards this one so far (hehe..I guess I won't be holding back like I said earlier after all).

I just got the Sokolov-DVD - WOW!!!!

Really amazing, the Beethoven sonatas better than I ever heard them. Then the Prokofieff, incredible.

The encores too: Listen to the Mazurkas, this is real magic.

I heard Sokolov in concert last year, and that was also the best concert I have heard for decades.

In my view, he is really the greatest living pianist today.

That's the only recording of Op. 25 #10 that I've heard that approaches Lazar Berman's.
