I'm looking for a site where I can search a title in order to hear the piece. Do you know of any off-hand?

On the Tower Records website, you can search a composition and then listen to the first 30 seconds of each track on a CD - if a 30-second clip is enough for what you're looking for.

www.towerrecords.com

I found this very useful when I was debating about a tempo for the second movement of the Schubert A Major Sonata, D664. I was able to check the tempo of each of ten different pianists and thereby feel more comfortable with the tempo I had settled on myself, and which I continue to adhere to.

Regards,

www.amazon.com also lets you preview the start of each track on a CD (not sure if its as long as 30 seconds though!)

Usually it's a minute!

alexander street press classical music library.... My university does not have it but my friend's does...If you are a student... your school may well have it through their online library archives.

This site is awesome... I wish I could get my school to subscribe.... OR I wish they had individual subscriptions... but you can find stuff from plain chant to Stockhousen. It is amazing, and they are recordings not midi... and sometimes more than one recording for a different perspective. You can not download, but you can save play lists online and listen in hgh or low quality streaming.

I think all music schools should allow their students access to the site.

If I had direct link I would show you but it its through my friend's university library and needs a student id for log in.

Maybe if enough people bother Alex press.... we can get individual accounts for a small fee! I am sure it is expensive for the universities.

Necie,
Thanks for that source. I'll mention it to my school and hope to get lucky. The piece I'm trying to listen to at the moment is the first Viennese Sonatina (Mozart). Since it's not a virtuoso piece it's not as available in recorded form. It was listed on one of the sales sites that gives you a sample but wasn't currently available. I don't have any problem playing the piece, but I'd really like to see how much liberty others take with it. Oh well, guess I'll just keep using my own intuition until I can interact with someone elses!

To all posters,
Thanks for all the sites. Even though none helped me for the specific piece I'm interested in a the moment, they'll all be useful down the road. I hope people will keep posting these kinds of sources. Walt

If all you want to do is hear how the piece goes, then this midi file is acceptable enough.

Still looking for a "real" performance

Thanks Lance.
That really didn't do the trick because there was no interpretation - just the notes. I want to see how much interpretive lee-way others have taken. I appreciate your help though. Walt
