Hello,

I'v recently bought Richard Goode's recordings of beethoven's piano sonatas.

I find that I like the sound of the piano on these recordings more than I like the sound of the piano on most recordings.

I assume that most recordings are being recorded using Steinways.
Does anyone have an idea which piano has been used for Goode's recordings? Is that a Steinway too?

probably a Steinway, since his name is on the Steinway Artist Roster (http://www.steinway.com/html/concert/roster_d_g.html).

We had a thread some time ago in which I, among others, decried the fact that record companies so seldom indicate which make of piano is used for the recording session of a given disc. They tell us everything else we (don't) want to know: Producer, engineer, sound mixer, editor, photographer, cover designer, location and date of the recording session, even the speakers used to monitor the session, but rarely the piano used. For most purchasers of piano recordings, it probably doesn't make any difference, but with all that information there why don't they simply add - as some recordings occasionally do - the make and even the serial number of the piano? It certainly is of great interest to many of us pianophiles.

We amateurs also don't know how much of the "success" of the sound on a piano recording is due to the engineering.

While listening to some of the Beethoven sonatas on the complete recording you referred to, I just checked my five other Richard Goode recordings. Only one indicates specifically a piano: A Hamburg Steinway was used for his recording with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra of the Mozart concertos 27 (K595) and 19 (K459), recorded in New York.

This doesn't mean that other recordings he also made in New York necessarily use the same Steinway. It may be a good guess that he does use a Steinway, however, going along with Magnezium's suggestion.

Speaking of great piano sound in recordings, I recently purchased a 2 CD set of various pieces performed by S. Richter. The first 4 or 5 cuts are Bach Preludes and Fugues recorded live in Italy. The piano's tone is fantastic, like it must be 12 feet long or something! Really nice tone. And he is such a great pianist.

The really dreadful thing about these recordings is the background noise. I've never heard anything like it. The concert must have taken place in the winter and at least half the audience must have had the flu! There is so much coughing during the C major prelude, that I was getting totally irritated--sitting all alone in my living room!

I have Richter's famous Sofia Recital (1958) with "Pictures at a Exhibition" on it. The BEST recital playing I've ever heard on recording (and I've heard 100s!) But the Bulgarian audience sounds like they were all dying of pleurisy!
