I find the Pogorelich recording to be most suited for my taste (not because I am the thing that says in my signature :p ). I only heard Pogorelich (audio) and Argerich (video) recording.

What do you think?

I myself just recently discovered this amazing piece, so I have only heard two recordings. Argerich (audio) and a video of Perlemuter. I thought Argerich was, by far, much better.

By the way, does anyone know what "Gaspard" means? I know "de la nuit" is "of the night". But I want to know "what" of the night.

Once during a concert at Carnegie Hall, the violinist Rachmaninoff was playing with lost his place in the music and whispered to Rachmaninoff, "Where are we?" Rachmaninoff replied, in all seriousness, "Carnegie Hall".

I think it's a name.. But I have no idea. And yes, I remembered now - I also saw the video of Perlemuter (it's that old guy right? smile ). I only wrote 2 because I didn't remember his name.

I am a huge fan of Minoru Nojima and have both of his CDs. I responded in a previous thread about his Liszt interpretations, but his Ravel's are marvelous too. Here\'s a review
The CDs are hard to come by, but worth the effort.

No doubt Pogorelich on DG recording. I also enjoy Alexander Kobrin live at the Cliburn Final.

Sa Chen - her interpretation was considerably better than Kobrin's at the Cliburn competition - if you go to cliburn.org you can watch it - all of the video from the competition is archived, she plays it last (I think) in her preliminary round.

this is definately one of my favorite pieces and i think that the pascal roge version is the best. oh and about the name, ravel wrote this piece for his father while he(ravel's father) was on his deathbed, so i think it would be a good guess to say his fathers name was gaspard(casper). but i have no idea if this is true.

Ravel's father's Christian name was Joseph.

From Wikipedia :

Siglind Bruhn, in Images and Ideas in French Piano Music (Pendragon Press, 1997)[1] traces the name Gaspard to a Persian original form, where the name denoted the man in charge of the royal treasures.

According to Bruhn:

Gaspard of the Night, or, the treasurer of the night…creates allusions to someone in charge of all that is jewel-like, dark, mysterious, perhaps even morose.”

Pogorelich definitely comes to mind, along with Gieseking and Gina Bachauer.

Isn't "Gaspard de la Nuit" the title of a set of poems written by Aloysius Bertrand?

"Gaspard de la Nuit" is discussed in Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaspard_de_la_nuit

According to that Wikipedia entry, the word "Gaspard" can be traced to a Persian origin, meaning "the man in charge of the royal treasures." Then it goes on to explain: "Gaspard of the Night, or, the treasurer of the night…creates allusions to someone in charge of all that is jewel-like, dark, mysterious, perhaps even morose."
