Below is my favorite scene from Ingmar Bergman's Autumn Sonata, a chamber drama about the difficult relationship between a woman (Liv Ullmann) and her emotionally distant concert pianist mother (Ingrid Bergman).

I am sorry that there are no subtitles in this clip, but the gist is that the daughter wants to show her progress on the Chopin Prelude #2. Afterwards, the mother is at first diplomatic about being moved, but then proceeds to the piano to demonstrate to her daughter her own take on the piece, with comments on how Chopin was a man of deep feeling but not a mawkish woman (or words to that effect), etc. She then performs her interpretation of the entire piece. A wonderful scene.

She was with me even in my grave
When the last of my friends turned away,
And she sang like the first storm heaven gave.
Or as if flowers were having their say.

Only a genius such as Bergman could take a Chopin Prelude, and play it twice in succession as the manifestation of an emotional barrier between two individuals and still keep the viewer's attention riveted.

Perhaps I'm being unfair, but I'm thinking that if a Hollywood producer had this in his/her hands, (would s/he even dare to try it?) it would have been two or three measures at most accompanied by cascading strings, and with knowing but unsubtle glances exchanged between the two actors. Or, perhaps Hollywood has "matured" since I stopped watching Hollywood movies!

The tight focus on the faces - the naive innocence of Ullmann and the serene, if cold elegance, of (Ingrid) Bergman[1] - is daring and masterfully realized. What control the two actors must have had to exercise to realize these moments. This is a most powerful scene.

Thank you for sharing!

[1] Was there ever a more beautiful face to grace the "silver screen" than that of Bergman?

Regards,

BruceD

I was going to exclaim about the same thing. How could he play a whole piece twice back to back in a movie. This demands some guts. Is the movie's theme about music?

Thanks for letting me know about this man.

Unfortunately, there is a horrible trend in my country that they only show American movies on TV (+/- some British) with total disregard to European cinema or cinema of any other locality. That is why I know nothing about this part of the filmography.

And I will add my voice that the latest American movies are rather tasteless, superficial and a complete waste of time - and a degeneration of manners, morals and every human trait you can think about .. and I already quit going to the cinema a couple of years ago. frown
