As some of you may already know, Boston University musicology professor John Daverio has been missing since March 16. His body was found yesterday in a river near Boston, drowning being the cause of death. Daverio's biography of Robert Schumann is the definitive work on the subject, and his books and articles on German Romanticism have been a wonderful contribution to the musicological community. He will be sorely missed.

"If we continually try to force a child to do what he is afraid to do, he will become more timid, and will use his brains and energy, not to explore the unknown, but to find ways to avoid the pressures we put on him." (John Holt)

At the risk of sounding insensitive, the first thing I thought of was Schumann throwing himself into the Rhine.

Yes, he will be missed.
