Any thoughts on this pianist? I have only heard his recording of Prokofiev Concertos 2 & 3 which is one of my favorite CDs. He plays both concertos so passionately.

Just now I was listening to samples of his Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1 and Rach Rhapsody at the Telarc website, and then the Brahms Concerto No. 1, and it sounds like there is just so much passion in his playing.

Hmmm... nobody else around here seems to have any thoughts on Gutierrez's playing?

Is that because not too many people have heard of him? Or is it because not too many people want to comment?

One of my favorite pianists. I'm hearing him this saturday playing Chopins 1st +D

Also several years ago my mother and I watched him play Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. He got two standing ovations, one at the end and one at the end of the 1st movement.

I like his Rachmaninoff 3rd and I love his Rachmaninoff 2nd. His Tchaikovsky concerto is good enough and his Paganini variations are a bit better. The Prokofiev 3rd is great and his Prokofiev 2nd is outstanding.

Now for the bad news. His Brahms Concertos are dull, don't waste your money on them. The sound quality is flat and lifeless as well, fittingly.

All in all, a spectacular technician with a big heart. I wish there were more recordings of his playing - I haven't found even one Solo CD.

Heard him give a master class at Ravinia in the 70s, but don't remember a lot about it, except that he seemed reasonable and pretty well informed. His career hasn't seemed to progress very much since then.

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, IT'S A ZOMBIE THREAD! EVACUATE THE BUILDING!!

But seriously, I have his Prokofiev 2nd concerto and Brahms 1st and 2nd concerto recordings. The P2 is ridiculously good, probably my favorite recording. The B1 is pretty awesome, but the B2 is even better. He is a very, very good pianist.

I agree, Gutierrez is a fine pianist. I also have his P2 (I can't listen to his P3 for obvious reasons), and I think only John Browning's knuckle-busting recording exceeds Gutierrez. (The old Frager recording has a legendary status, but I've only read that.)

Funny about the resurrection of ancient threads. I never notice right away how old they are, until I start seeing a bunch of PW members I don't recognize... with the exception of Bassio. What happened to him? I know he was studying medicine in Alexandria, but several years ago he dropped out of sight. Nice guy- we used to exchange PMs, alas, pre-Facebook.

Edit: not to imply that I didn't recognize pianojerome or Palindrome!

I remember and miss all of them! Bassio, Jeff135, and iamcanadian were all particularly involved and great contributors to the forum back in 2005.

I've only seen him a couple of times playing a concerto (forget which ones) but I wasn't impressed at the time. Could have been the quality of the video/sound or something. But with the astuteness of the posters perhaps I've missed something and need to listen to some of the mentioned works.

I attended one of Gutierrez's concerts many years ago and thought he was absolutely fabulous. I love this terrific pianist! His Rach 2 and 3, Prokofiev 2 and 3 (my most favorite), and Brahms 1 and 2 CD's (I agree with OJS's post- it is terrific!!)are all superb! Wish I was around when the post began.

I saw him perform Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto two months ago, and he was absolutely fantastic.
