One example would be a chord sequence C-F-A-C, C-F-G-C, C-E-G-C. The middle one is Csus4: the 'sus' part means 'suspended' in the sense that the F (4th degree of the scale) is held over from the previous 2nd inversion F chord, and doesn't move towards C major when the other parts do, and resolves itself (moving down to E, i.e. the 3rd degree of the scale) in the last chord. Not a very eloquent explanation, I know, but that's the best I can do at the moment smile .

Another way of thinking about it is that a sus chord replaces the 3rd with the 4th or 2nd.

So Csus4 is CFG and Csus2 is CDG.

Michael is also correct in that it's often used as a (somewhat clumsy) way to notate suspensions in popular music lead sheets.

Another question:

I've seen just Csus, what is that referring to, 4th or 2nd?
