Get a spinet! :p (said with a twinge of envy)

Or maybe get a smaller rug? smile Or rugs...

The other (crazy) solution: cut slots in the rug for the wheels. Then you can have fun stitching the strips back in! laugh

OK, I have no helpful ideas. whome

You don't need a car Jack. I got my Bosie 214(826lbs) onto a 13 X 8 rug with just one other person. You lift a leg and the other person slides the carpet under. You keep repeating until the carpet is centered.

What about the pad? Aren't you going to use a pad?

Getting a big rug onto a pad isn't easy, if you want the thing properly centered. Add a concert grand and you're in a heap o' trouble!!

I'd pay the piano movers, but then I paid movers to reposition my 40 YO upright. Not because of the piano, but because the damage to floor, etc was just not worth it.

And what do you do if you've got 3 of your nearest and dearest to help and after it is all centered, the rug pad is hanging out of the edge?

OK, two questions:

Just how thick is that rug exactly? If it is really thin, it shouldn't be a problem rolling across it.

Does this piano have those huge industrial casters that are so popular now, or those more standard little wheels?

If you don't already have them, maybe an upgrade to huge casters will help just such a situation?

PS: I'm thinking this is already a done deal, and here we are: debating! laugh For all we know he is happily ensconced on the rug, practicing merrily at the piano, oblivious to our ideas. confused laugh

Normally I don’t expose my casters till the 3rd date.
But I’ve had two glasses of wine, and you seem like a nice guy, and what's wrong with a little whippen? so . . .

Feast your eyes on my casters.
Sorry bout the "focus".

Thank you for sharing your casters, Kenny.

They are so big and shiny! 3hearts (in spite of the artsy "soft focus" shot!)

I didn't expect the rug photo - gosh! shocked

It looks so ruglike. [Linked Image]

Now I'm absolutely impressed.

I predict you will be able to slide the rug effortlessly under those casters.

Actually, your friends will do the rug sliding. You will supervise (with a glass of wine, of course)!

I just measured it the height of the rug.
Without the cork underlayment which arrives tomorrow, the padding and rug are 3/4 inch.

The 6 mm cork underlayment will add about 1/4 inch.

Total height of the system will be about an inch.

Here is the room . . . waiting . . . longing . . . listening for the truck.

I assume they will assemble the piano on the rug and not need to roll it onto the rug.

No?

Ken, nice rug. After they set up the piano you might want to position the bench, sit down, and check out the piano's alignment relative to the rug.

If the keyboard end of the piano does not parallel those lines in the rug it may be disconcerting to you when you play.

When I moved to here last year it seemed like I could never position my piano bench so it was square to the piano. It always seemed a bit off. The problem was with the piano-rug alignment.

Tell us more about the cork underlayment. How is it sold --- as squares that you piece together or what? I'd like to see pics if it isn't too much trouble. Where did you buy the cork?

I know you must be getting excited.

You could ask the movers to bring a template with them and lay out the template first. I've never done this with a grand piano, but when I have had other heavy, expensive pieces of furniture delivered the decorator always had a template to make sure any placement issues were resolved before moving actually started.

Piano will be positioned at about a 10 degree angle to the side of the rug, so no problem.

I think cork underlayment is usually used during construction UNDER the flooring material to absorb sound.

For me it is kind of late since the house was built in 1928.
I will be putting it directly on TOP of my oak floor.
No glue, nails or staples.
Three strips of it, 4 ft wide each, will equal 12 feet, the long dimension of the rug.

Next a very thick and heavy rug pad, that has a rubber bottom for slip control, and soft stuff on the other side for happy feet.
Then the rug.
Then three 9-inch square 1/4 inch aluminum plates to distribute the weight of the piano over several 1-inch strips of my old creaky floor.
Then the piano.
Then me.
Yippeeee. laugh

It comes in rolls 4 feet wide.
The one I bought is 50 feet long, twice what I need, but the extra will be put to good use.
Some people glue it onto a wall and then paint it.
There is another source that sells smaller rolls.
Just goolge cork underlayment.

This company has a special, 200 sq ft for $119.
Then it costs about half that to ship it.

I hope this goes well for you. An inch of carpet, pad and cork is pretty high and with the weight of a concert grand it should compress quite a bit. You could use caster cups to spread the weight out a bit but then the piano might sit too high for your bench. Some people worry about "de-coupling" the piano from the floor as if it was a hi-fi speaker but I think this is nonsense.

Let us know how it works out.

Instead of casters I have aluminum plates to spread out the weight.
9 in x 9 in
1/4 inch thick
And the bench is adjustable.

Of course it will compress, but my only concern with compression is that the pedals may be low.
If that's the case I'll get thicker aluminum plates under the casters.

I also used a car jack. I placed the jack on the floor, cut a 2x4 to go between the jack and the bottom of the piano, and Bob's your uncle! BTW, the bottom of the 2x4 was cut so it couldn't slide off the jack.

Why is there a Kennnny and a Kenny? I know you are the same person, so what's up? Did you reregister or are you being a very unsneaky sock-puppet?

You will be 10 years older, ten years from now, no matter what you do - so go for it!

Just so I'm clear---there's going to be plenty of room on the rug for the piano, you sitting at the piano on the bench, and for you pushing the bench backwards without it falling slipping/getting caught on the ledge of the carpet right??

Kenny just curious. I've seen some houses built in the 20s and some of them were built prior to either good code or good building inspectors. Did you check the joists under your piano room to make sure 1) they are wide enough and 2) I actually saw this, that they are continuous and not spliced together? If there is a problem you can sister in additional joists.
