This idea didn't come from any industry sources. It is strictly a thought that occured to me.

Bob Jones, who recently was trying to buy Samick is now at the helm of Baldwin. Gibson seems still poised to buy Samick, dominantly for its large guitar manufacturing business.

What if Gibson were to spin off the Samick piano division and merge it with Baldwin? Baldwin could focus on building only high-end grands. The Baldwin dealers could still be marketing their lower-quality Wurlitzer and Chickering lines, only they would be stenciled Samicks. Bob Jones is actually just the guy to pull this off.

This could save an American manufacturer and adds a high-end American made piano, IF Baldwin can still build one. If it was their only focus, I believe they could.

Taking two companies in bankruptcy and making one decent, multi-national company might be a pipe dream, but it could work. They could be a real force in the industry.

Well, this is my half-baked thougt. What do you think?

Gibson has withdrawn their offer to buy Samick, citing Samick's drastic decline in piano sales in recent months as the reason. It seems that were it not for the Korean system of propping up companies in bankruptcy Samick would already be gone.

It also speaks volumes about the state of the piano business, and where it may be heading.

Two negatives do not make a positive. Not in business anyway.

Must be tough in the piano business right now. In my area the Young Chang dealer went out of business about two months ago. This month the dealer who carried Yamaha and Baldwin closed his doors. That leaves us with two dealers. One sells Steinway, Walter and Boston. The other has Kawai.

Hello Steve!

Interesting, my local music dealership was carrying Young Chang also (including Prams.)
Now they will no longer be carrying them. The salesman told me they were to expensive!
Go figure! confused

Anyway, as a side note I noticed you are from South Carolina! I have a son serving there in Spartanburg presently. smile He's been to Cheraw also. Beautiful country I see from the pictures he has sent us. Small world eh!

Regards. Teri

A couple months ago, the local Steinway dealer "merged" with the Young Chang dealer. His store still carries only Steinway, Boston, and Samick along with a few unadvertised Charles Walter verticals. I think the YCs might have gone to his Peoria branch. The store carrying Kawai dropped the line a couple years ago. We're left with Steinway and a Yamaha store. Then, again, all the True Value hardware stores have closed, too, even though the town is growing like we lived out there close to Dan rather than here in the flatlands.

Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as heck...
