It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
I'm hoping to keep the interest up in the Piano Bar, but don't have anything new ready - too many "deer in the headlights" moments while trying to make a recording. So instead I'll share a classical guitar piece that I had in the Transcription themed recital last year. The notes are exactly the same as the guitar sheet music (a single line of music written on the treble staff. All I did was decide which hand played which notes.
Hi lilypad, and thanks for getting the July Piano Bar started!
However, I could not access your recording to listen to it. It said I needed to sign-in to Google Drive, and I'm not sure how to do that. I signed in to Google Gmail, but it said access denied when I tried to open your link. I also have a YouTube account, but not sure what Google Drive is.
Looking forward to hearing your recording!

Sorry about that. I normally use Box, but couldn't get the file to play without downloading it, so I experimented with my Google drive instead. Guess it didn't work! I tried Box again just a minute ago and it seems to be working again.

Thanks Rick. With regard to the piano it is just over six months since it was last tuned and ideally I would like it to be tuned again but here in the UK (indoor) humidity levels are just beginning to rise above 60% and I'm wondering if I should delay retuning to September or even October.
Okay, I was in the mood to play/record one of my original blues songs this morning on my digital piano to share here on the July Piano Bar.
However, after a few redos of the recording I thought I had a recording I liked, only to find that the battery in my camcorder had died during the recording. But the Zoom H4n did record the audio of the song.
So, here is an MP3 audio file (via Dropbox), without the video, of my original blues song "You know you got the blues". Not sure if I've posted this here before on the Piano Bar, I don't remember (part of getting old I guess )
keff - Nikki Iles "Breezin' Through" sounded great. I'm glad you chose it. I have the book (thanks to your information on the "Moon River" arrangement you played in an earlier Piano Bar. I'm familiar with the standards in that book, but not the other original pieces in the book. It was nice to hear you play one of them.
Rickster -That was impressive blues! I liked the back and forth where you'd sing or talk and play a sequence on piano. I'm not sure if the form is called "call and response", but it has a classic blues sound.

Thanks, lilypad, and Keff!
And, yes, Keff, those high notes can be a challenge. When the high notes are not quite reached, and a bit flat, it can sound pretty bad. Have to work that abdominal diaphragm, like they taught me in music class in high school.
Looking forward to more presentations to the Piano Bar!

Thanks Lilypad. I like all the pieces in the book either originals by Nikki Iles or the standards she has arranged. I haven't learned them all by any means but I will record and post them eventually although I am guilty of ignoring the Bach French Suite I am meant to be working on. I also like some of the other pieces by the other composers.
Thanks for your post Rick. I played both the pieces in this thread at my piano group yesterday. Not sure if Breezin'Through was liked very much !
I'm sure your Piano Buddies group enjoyed your performance of "Breezin' Through", keff.
But I know what you mean when it comes to pleasing an audience, big or small (or at least trying to ). There have been times when playing for the Piano Buddies group I'm part of that my performance was well received, and I got lots of smiles and applause. There have been other times when there wasn't many smiles, or too much (if any) applause. It can go both ways.
It has been my experience that if I like my own music, others usually like it too, but not always.
In fact, our Piano Buddies group is having a recital meet this afternoon, and I'm still not 100% sure what I'll play. I think I'll know it when I get there...

"Ain't Misbehavin' " ......honest. Arranged by Nikki Iles.
Keff - That was very enjoyable! I really like the Nikki Iles arrangement. I have sheet music for three different arrangements (including Nikki's) at approximately the same level. I haven't played any of them yet. I'll have to compare them all when I have time to take on that project.
Regarding the piece your piano group liked the best, I've read that people tend to go for what they're familiar with.
Thank you Lilypad. I am wondering if I should polish up Basin Street Blues as the next piece from the book.
Rick, hope your Piano Buddies meeting went well.
Thanks, keff! I just got back from the Piano Buddies event/recital/dinner, and it was great! At least all the other piano buddies who performed did a great job! The event was at our own Sam Smith's (and Tootles/Laurie's) house. We had a good turn out, with 10 performers and 3 non-player listeners.
I played a bluesy version of an older Americana Folk Song, "This land is your land", by Woodie Guthrie, from the late 1940s. The group seemed to like it well enough, and I liked it too. It was a bit different and unique from the norm, which most all my playing is, for better or worse.
They are a great group of folks!
I may record my bluesy rendition of "This land is your land" and post it here in the July Piano Bar.
Looking forward to more presentations here on the July Piano Bar!
All the best!

Great choice of song Lilypad! That's on my decompression playlist after a long day of work and dealing with kids haha! Wonderful job Keff and Trickster!
