So next up in the series of Ballades is no 3 which I think (hopefully) that I'm much more familiar with/practiced at than no 2. I think I'm doing decent on it but of course am always open for critique.

Good level already.

Some pedals and phrasing are disturbing me though.

I played it recently and I share you the link just as information: https://www.weefeen.com/scores/performance/68?perf=6717312f-f846-11ec-900d-f23c9359c9d6

If you want more specific feedback on your performance, let me know

This performance is rushed, almost harried at times, and that - to me, at any rate - misses so much of the musical and even lyrical qualities of this piece. The opening seems particularly dry which, in part, may be due to the instrument itself but certainly is more due to improper pedaling. If you could work towards getting more flow, more continuous connection among the elements and more direction to the opening pages, I think that would help considerably. For my taste, a more relaxed tempo would also seem appropriate.

Of course we each have our own concept of a piece, but your commentary about fighting, good guys - bad guys, party, and comedy etc., trivializes this piece to a degree that makes me wonder if you really understand Chopin.

That said, you certainly seem to have the technique to handle this work, as some of the passage work shows clarity that only a good technique can produce. It's a pity, to me, that you have taken the approach that you have. That is, however, your artistic licence, isn't it?

Regards,

This would go very well with some vintage Charlie Chaplin style movie.
Those captions should be in title cards ; white font on black background.

Yeah! That's very much what I was imagining, it was actually a black and white version of Gatsby that I was thinking of when writing all of this stuff down.

Your level is good.

But the piano is so out of tune and sounds bad. It does not justify your playing.

If you have a chance to record this even on a digital piano IMO, we would get a better understanding of your music.

Maybe you would use less pedal on those left hand figurations and do not rush at times.

Well done anyway.

Just in the first two lines of the piece there are numerous rhythmical inaccuracies that depart so clearly from the score they could not fall under the category of "rubato". Other markings in the score are also ignored.

Some constructive criticism:
- Overall sound and phrasing are harsh, almost on the vulgar side. I know you're going for a humorous interpretation, but even funny Chopin should be lyrical and refined.
- Legato is missing. Some passages with slurs on the score are played almost staccato.
- The tempo seems a bit rushed. However it could be kept as is, if you correct the two previous points. E.g., Pollini's version is even shorter, but so lyrical and expertly phrased that it sounds nice.

Thanks! One day I will get a better piano when I can afford it... as for a digital, I tried playing some things on a digital but maybe it was too cheap of a digital or I am not used to them but I played rather badly on the digital.

You're right, I did want it to be a bit more fun than the usual ballade you hear, but okay on making it more lyrical and less dry. I have some technical issues to work on in the runs sections too since I am bad at scale-like figurations. The C# broken chords section is also still uncomfortable so I'll work on it. Maybe that is part of the reason it sounds rushed too.

Hi Nemaara!

Instead of long criticism, I just say: Listen to great interpreters, and you will hopefully discover all the treasures hidden behind this score! "Rush&beat" definitely isn't the right approach grin

One of my favourite recordings:
