The melodic organization in jazz is built around three pillars: a vocalized melody - like Misty, a percussive melody (like C jam Blues or One Note Samba) and speech melody ( characterizing free jazz , f.e. Focus On Sanity by Ornette ). Usually they mix; even in free jazz, despite the strong emphasis on the speech melody, you can set the other two types. Jazz standards belong to the first type, percussive melodies appear already in the New Orleans period ( Tiger Rag). Interestingly, we already hear the speech melody in the music of Mussorgsky; but as a basic concept, it appeared in the music of the New Viennese School - A. Schoenberg, A. Berg and A. Webern. All names start with A; maybe there is something in there ).

Are there any objections to such a classification?

Hi Nahum

So where would tunes like Billies Bounce or A Night in Tunisia fit in?

Cheers

Bebop was originally anti-vocal, percussive, and contained prosody intonations. On Night in Tunisia, the first part sounds like a somewhat hysterical speech; but just the bridge is vocalized in contrast, and resembles a not too jazzy "Lullaby of Birdland". Billie's Bounce is primarily percussive ; in the last third - prosody .
