What level do you think Haydn's sonata #27 in G major is?

You mean HOB XVI:27 ? The level in comparison with what reference ? It is an intermediate level. I would guess somewhere around rcm9. Easier than say hob 20 for example.

Difficulty in relation to what? In relation to other keyboard works by Haydn, you'll find this resource helpful.

https://www.pianolibrary.org/difficulty/haydn/

It ranks the 3 movements as follows:

1 - 2.5
2 - 2
3 - 2.5

This is on a scale of 1 to 5 that is applied to the works of other composers as well. Only one work by Haydn reaches a 4.

So - to answer your question, Sonata No. 27 is of moderate difficulty and probably suitable for late intermediate or early advanced players (when played up to tempo). smile

It’s RCM level 7. You can check what other pieces are at that level on the RCM syllabus here:

Out of curiosity I checked it. The 2nd movement is RCM 7 and the 3rd movement is RCM 8. I could not see a ranking for the 1st movement, but it is safe to assume that it is comparable in difficulty to the 3rd. The 2nd is a tad easier.

Looks to me like this composer plagiarized this last movement by somebody or other for that last movement: grin

BTW, another thing in "how difficult":
how we're thinking we want to play it.

To play it the way this guy plays it:

P.S. That guy seems to look exactly like Dustin Hoffman.

There is a quote from Sviatoslav Richter that I can't find just now, it might have been something I read in a library book years ago (has anyone heard this?). Anyway, the Mozart Variations on "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman", K. 265 (aka the "Twinkle Twinkle" variations) - it's ABRSM grade 5, but Richter thought it was terrifyingly difficult. Or rather, terrifyingly difficult to play to his own artistic standard.

ABRSM Grade 5 is only addressing two of the variations: variation 1 and 5. They did not include a rating for the other 10 variations.

Music can be rated on a simple scale: 1 if you can play it to your acceptable standard, 0 if not. Pieces can go either way from time to time.

Answers in a forum can be rated on a simple scale: 1 if the answer helps you, 0 if not.

(Just teasing a little. wink )

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.
