After many weeks of lurking different piano stores, I came down to the CLP-785 vs NU1X, here is my reasoning:

CLP-785: Good action, good sounds, a lot of instruments, functions, etc... Can easily be assembled and disassembled. My room is upstairs so this factor really helps.

NU1X: Action is better. The sound is better. Overall I like it better but it is not a huge difference. The only problem is it is heavy and comes in one piece.

What do you guys think? I plan to buy it at the Piano Guy Stores so it is about the same price.

Nu1x for me without a doubt. Played one a few times at the dealer and loved it. I’m still in the process of talking myself into splurging for one for my office - and one day I’ll surely wear myself down wink

Perhaps if you could come to an agreement with the dealer on ‘returning’ the NU1X if it doesn’t fit (up the stairs, etc…)……..

“Action is better.” “The sound is better.” What else do you want; a few useless violins 🎻 and some tacky trumpets?

The NU1X is the real deal in every sense of the word, and there ain’t no “simulated” action and/or a few trombone ‘sounds’ that’ll beat that. IMHO!

Hello,

@88keysonly, It seems that if you had the choice, you'd prefer the NU1X. For piano purity, I'd indeed reckon it to be the better choice between the two -- by quite some margin.

So, the only hurdle then is to get it to your room. It is heavy, yet on the flip side it is "just" half the weight of e.g. a Yamaha U3 acoustic upright.

I'd consult a decent piano mover to assess the feasibility of them getting your new piano where you want it. If they're positive and you are agreeable with hiring them to do the heavy lifting, then I'd say your have a decent plan and are good to go.

And/or make your deal with a local dealer who is willing to provide the service of setting the piano up where you need it to be.

Cheers and happy decision making,

HZ

I was deciding between the NU1X and the CLP-685 and went with the NU1X. However while it is a hybrid digital piano it is more like an upright than digital when it comes to size and weight. If you are moving this upstairs I would plan on paying for professionals to move it for you.

Thank you all for the replies. I agree it is a broad comparison versus functionality and convenience. It is a heavy instrument and requires professionals to move it for sure!

I wanted to upgrade from my P515. Moving that slab to my office to practice at lunchtime. I tried NU1x and CLP-785 back to back. I would say the action on the NU1x is far superior to the CLP-785. I will be using this as my practice instrument for silent practice. Feels much more similar to my Bechstein than the CLP.

Working on:
Bach Preludes and Fugues (Assorted)
Beethoven Appassionata Sonata
Chopin Scherzo #3

Practicing on:
Yamaha NU1X
Yamaha P-515

Playing on:
C. Bechstein Concert A192

Old Flames:
1987 Yamaha C2
2020 Kawai K-300 Aures
