Well, y'know. You think "I've done this before, no prob!" and I have, in the time before the USB stick bore down upon us with its multiplicity of uses.
I'd connect my headphone socket of the DGX I had at that time, to the "audio in" of the Windows 7 'puter, a desktop.
Audacity did the rest faultlessly.
So I fondly thinks I can do the same with my favourite little beast of a piano. You can pretty much guess the rest.

Results were bad, and whatever I tried (reducing output from h'phone socket etc) changed nothing.
My laptop is a Windows 10 device; it has a headphone socket which also acts as a mic imput. I'm using it as an audio input in the absence of any other.
I suspect the line-outs might be the better choice of output in this instance, but any other ideas are welcome. I fail to see the problem other than impedance. And I don't think it's that.
I appreciate any words of wisdom . . . . smile

Peter, how exactly are the bad results? No audio, extreme low level audio, high level terribly distorted?

What cable are you using to connect the ES110 to your laptop?

Old laptops/pcs had separate jacks for headphone outputs and mic, modern laptops have jacks compatible with smartphone headphones (TRRS - tip/ring/ring/sleve) where the mic is on the sleve. I suspect the problem has something to do with the difference between these two configurations.

Would you consider getting a low cost USB interface to record from the line outputs? You would probably manage to get a better quality recording.

Peter, are you sure that the headphone socket on your Windows laptop is acting as a mic input? Several years ago I had a related problem trying to connect a Yamaha P95 to a MacBook Pro, only to find that there was no mic input on the laptop (Apple had shifted that function to the earbuds, I believe). Here's the thread:

Recording DP to computer

Do you still have your desktop computer?

(If all else fails there's still Pianoteq ... ) smile

Question answered.

The laptop almost certainly has monophonic mic input, not stereo. So an inexpensive stereo-to-USB adapter (check the Behringer catalog) is likely your best bet.

(Sorry for the mis-timing of reply.)

Hello,

@peterws, I think all the wise words have already been spoken above.

-> Indeed, the line outs (one of the nice pluses of the ES-110!) are the way to go.
-> From there, into an audio interface and from that, via USB, to your computer.

Cheers and happy recording,

HZ

The mic input is stereo as it happens; but the audio output powering Audacity (from where I'd achieve a playable mp3 or wav. file) was crazy; I had a slow vibrato cominig through on the recording, with most notes clipped and distorted.
I thought to try a Pianoteq recording into Audacity, so I did, with my old Stage 4.5 from years back..
The result was fantastic; totally unexpected; it was better than the onboard piano to play now. Of course, all my settings were back to default . . .so I did the same for my latest PTq Standard updates (7.5.3) and that too, was so much better.
Too much fiddling around by me; I paid the price.
But I will acquire an audio interface. Thanks guys!

Bit of an update. I got some cable adaptors for the line-outs to feed into the headphone socket of the laptop, which it did.
The results unfortunately, were the same as they were from the piano h/phone socket.
Eventually I got around to reducing savagely the volume delivered from this, and it was apparent that clipping and distortion was taking place; the visuals confirmed this. Now, Audacity doesn't seem to be as easy to sort as it once was, or I'm just too old and in denial; a thing that comes easy to me these days.
The result of this reduced volume was . . .a clean recording! But I'd noticed a vibrato present too, in this and my previous attempts. Now, though it sounds quite tasteful, I'd much rather it went away.
I suspect my laptop headphone socket is one o' those which takes 4 connections, not just three as for stereo. It may have something to do with "balanced" and "unbalanced" outputs from the piano . . .
So, if any of you eminently knowledgeable folk can stop the wobble . .. then the job's a good 'un!

Peter, I’d still try connecting to the ‘audio in’ of your desktop computer (if you still have it) and see what happens …

Hello Marie. That 'puter went in the bin some time ago; the new desktop is identical to my Windows 10 laptop, whilst costing three times the amount.
But there is this happy ending.
The distorting and clipping has been dealt with by a much reduced incoming signal from the lappie whilst the vibrato was caused by one of the electric pianos from that section (where I'd stored the piano via the hoops you jump through). I had stored a piano setting using the appropriate buttons, and somehow, the vibrato from the EP concerned made itself felt!
Definitely one for Kawai James to enjoy . . .
So all is good and with no outlay apart from a couple of adaptors I never used. I get a very clear recording.

TBH it's a weight off my mind. I used this old tried and tested method years ago with few problems (a bit of hiss which could be removed), but who knows? Maybe Audacity's latest and greatest is too sensitive; it's detecting stuff I can't hear in normal use, and displaying it in no uncertain terms. Too much for my head!
But it's all over now . . . .and this little piano well deserves to be recorded!
