On 1 February I shall be going to Cambodia for a brief contract. So I want to investigate pianos in Phnom Penh. I don't play these days following my shoulder injury.

I will be back in time for the piano party in July.

Hi Philip! I have a friend in Cambodia, and I hate to say it but he’s been stuck there for the whole pandemic. Make certain that you’re able to get out of the country again, because my friend is saying that he won’t be able to leave until sometime after the Chinese new year. They have had very strict rules as far as the pandemic goes. If anything changes, you may be stuck there for a while. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Hope everything goes well for you, and I hope you find some great pianos to check out!

Yes, but they’ve been moving the goalpost for 2 years. He’s told me he could leave after a certain day about 8 times, lol. Just giving a heads up. 👍

The US State Dept. warns about street crime (pickpockets and purse snatchers) in Phnom Penh and about land mines in other areas. Specifically: Do not touch unknown metal objects; instead notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437. Use a local guide when walking in forested areas or dry rice paddies in these areas. So there's that. Watch your hand when you poke around in the piano strings! Although, probably any piano in a forest or a rice paddy isn't worth poking around.

Interesting that he can't leave. Generally the restrictions are all about entry and they don't care about anyone leaving.

I know, it’s odd. I take him at his word, though, I’ve known him for over 20 years and I speak to his kids regularly. He missed his daughter’s wedding last year, and his sister’s funeral (she died from COVID, it was horrible). Really odd!

I’m emailing him to get to the bottom of it. I never really asked what the restriction is before!

So disregard anything I said about Cambodia, my friend there has a particular circumstance that wouldn’t apply to you. He’s Indian, was working in China, and when he was in Cambodia his visa expired because of all flight cancellations and lockdowns. So there’s a lot of issues surrounding that, and the government is really taking its time in getting this settled.

I am going! In fact this time next week my journey will have begun. I have signed a contract and have never broken a contract in my life. I don't intend to start being unreliable so close to the grave.

Enjoy!!! How exciting, my friend Ravi loves Cambodia, it's a beautiful country and I'm sure you're going to love it, too! Take pics and tell us all about the piano stores you found, and any performances you might have happened upon!

I see you have changed your location from Bulgaria to Cambodia already. You MUST give us a tour--through your eyes--even if it doesn't involve pianos!

Have fun! I'm looking forward to seeing you in July! The restrictions here ended yesterday, so hopefully it's onwards and upwards!
