I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you.

I’ve been thinking that losing your house is almost like dying. They say when you die you “can’t take it with you” and here I have gone and lost everything I own. All my photos, yearbooks, videos… a lifetime of memories just gone.

Twain suffered great losses throughout his life. One of seven children, only three of his siblings survived childhood. When Twain was 11, he lost his father to pneumonia. He lost a younger brother to a steamboat explosion. He lost a young son to diptheria. His beloved wife died, Olivia, died before he did, as did his young daughter, Susy, and another daughter, Jean.

As for death, Twain reasoned that dying would be returning to a time exactly like that before his birth. He said that he remembered no pain or grief during the vast expanse of time when he did not exist, and he felt the time after would be the same.

Twain had a beautiful house constructed in Hartford, Connecticut but he had to close it and go on speaking tours in Europe to pay off his creditors after being bankrupted by his investment in an early typesetting machine, which never reached production.

I dearly love our little house from 1925, which I just had renovated with a new roof, new cedar siding, and new historically accurate windows, yet to be installed. If it were to burn down, I would build it back better. I would mourn its loss, there is no doubt, but then I would engage the services of an architect and I would start anew. Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin burned twice, once by arson and a second time from an electrical fire. Each time, he built something better.

Peyton, this is horrible. It is difficult to write anything, as, nothing will be adequate to console you.

I guess we can take solace in the fact that this must be the darkest moment you will ever face, and consequently, things from here will inevitably get better. Your great talent at improvisation and its requisite character traits will surely be a great asset to you as you face the challenges ahead.

Your goodness and talent will make this alright somehow. It will be better.

I'm one of those here who also has had the pleasure of meeting you. It was a long time ago, probably about 10-11 years ago -- I think I saw from your website that you were going to be at an art show near here, just north of New York City, and I eagerly went and was so glad to meet you. We happily have one of your art pieces, right over there in the next room. >>

We also are among those who lost a house, in a hurricane (2012). We also were lucky to be well insured, and "nobody got hurt," but it was a tough scramble until we got re-settled.

I got a digital piano last year, mainly for when I travel, and am very happy with it. It's a Casio Privia PX-S3000. Before picking it, I did a lot of looking and 'research,' the main part of which was asking about keyboards here in the DP section, which helped a lot.

I see that there are reports in the media about your tragedy. And, BTW, the 27th of a month is the saddest date of our lives for both my wife and me -- different things, different months, different years, and hers was before I knew her, but both were on the 27th.
(And hers was December.)

Yea, we made news all across the state. The fire was so huge it closed down our road for hours. It is without a doubt the saddest moment of my life and I’ve had some pretty sad ones. I thought I was done crying until I found the body of my beautiful cat Luna today in the basement. I still can’t find Stella. I would have gladly given up my $30,000 grand (now a charred ruin) to have them back.

But life goes on, surprisingly.

I’ve ordered a Kawai ES520. Hopefully it’s as good as it sounds.

I gotta think it is. The reviews are unusually great. It seems like a piano I might well have grabbed if I had come across it. (We do have a 'regular' Kawai.)

Dear Peyton

I have only been on the Forum for a little while so don’t know you but cannot begin to imaging the devastation you are all going through. I wish you all the best and hope that in time things will get easier for you all.

Lets hope that getting your keyboard will enable you to spend some time loosing yourself in your playing even if for a short time each day. I find that playing the piano (not practicing but playing for pleasure) can be very relaxing and can take away the stresses of the day. Let’s hope it can do the same for you.

What a horrible shock and catastrophe. I see this happened at the beginning of last week, so maybe the shock is fading, but the ongoing reality of loss sets in. So sad about your kitties. I hope you can find Stella. It will be interesting to hear how and when you rebuild as you begin to make your plans. Best wishes.
