I was working on some Bach when the phones went off with tornado warnings. Then the warning sirens started. shocked

Off we went to the basement with a bundle of "just in case" stuff. I think it's past now (though there's another band of weather to the west), but I'm not sure I'll be headed back to the piano this evening.

I would say my concentration is shot for the evening (understatement, lol).

Stay safe!

No, no basement piano--but I haven't finished my Christmas list yet.....

The second band will be here in about 5 minutes, so we're headed back to the basement.

Living very far away from any tornado zone i don't know much about them, i thought they only occur during summer season. Do they occur usually at anytime, or it is just another case of weathet gone crazy?

Back upstairs, again. I think it's done now. This time I really mean it.

They can occur most any time. This was part of a large system moving across the country, though what hit us were two very narrow bands of intense weather.

I was in a building that got hit by a tornado some years back, in another state. It did a lot of damage in the area, and several people were killed. We had a small, localized tornado here about two years ago. It took off half our roof shingles and damaged the siding on our house. Not fun.

I am glad all went well. And you could go from the basement back to Bach.

We came through fine, but not everyone was so lucky. My prayers go out to those who lost loved ones or who suffered damage to their homes or places of business.

I will need to do a double dose of practice today to make up for last night. It's been awhile since I've played Bach (instead did a bunch of Scarlatti to satisfy my baroque quota). I'm working on French Suite No. 2. Bach can look so simple on the page, but then turn around and bite you. Right now I'm working on the Courante, which is in binary form and uses multiple sequences to move through changes in harmony (key changes). There are several obvious cadences, but also several longish stretches where (to my ear) the cadences are not obvious, with the result being that I find myself holding my breath. Perhaps I need to mark the spots where I need to breathe, both literally and musically, lol.

Our media talk about horrendous figures, an estimate of 70 people dead. Dreadful.

One of the deaths occurred about 20 miles from here, as the crow flies. People who don't have a basement or some secure place to take cover are so very vulnerable. And then, so often, these things come at night, when people are in bed or when you can't see anything because the power is out and it's dark outside. Double scary.

The news clips that I saw indicate what a wide-spread and horrendous tragedy this (these) tornado(s) caused. It seems unprecedented in US meteorological events. Words can hardly express what the survivors will have to endure in the weeks and months of rebuilding.

Stubbie: I am glad to read that you are safe.

Regards,

Sorry to hear. I watched the news earlier today. The devastation across some US states is terrible. Hope you're ok and your home escaped without damage.

Grew up in Oklahoma - spent many a weather-time in the car in the garage. I think that's no longer recommended, but that's the way we did it. I'm glad you're safe, but every time it storms I think about my relatives still in OK.

I've been through 2 bush fires (on our property) and more tornado warnings than I can count (ex-husband used to be a tornado 'spotter' in midwest of USA). Tornados scare the [censored] out of me.

I haven't seen a tornado, just a hurricane once. It was unforgettable. No TV report can convey it. I hadn't realized the power of our planet before seeing it.

Thanks for all of the expressions of concern for my safety. When I made my original post, I had no idea of the damage that was to come to the east of us as the storm progressed. The latest report I read this morning said the death toll may not be as high as originally feared, which would be very good news, indeed. The path of one of the tornadoes is said to be approximately 250 miles long, which would set a new record. The destruction--oh, so sad!

When I was a child, we heard about tornado warning over television or radio, and they would be far too late to do any good. Today's tools for spotting and tracking tornado-producing weather has saved many lives, in my opinion. When I look at radar and see narrow, north to south systems moving west to east, with a bulge near the middle (sort of like a relaxed boomerang), I know we're in for trouble. We had two of those come through on Friday evening, about an hour apart. According to the National Weather Service warning, the storm systems were traveling at 65-75 mph. When I see a radar trace like that headed our way, I get my tornado "kit" ready: flashlights, water bottle, phone, laptop, blanket--mostly for comfort while waiting out the storm, and wallet and car keys-because you'd never find them again if your house got hit. But in the end, there's just no preparing for getting hit full bore by a tornado. You just hope you're in a protected space.
